Pets - The Silent Victims of Foreclosure

The housing catastrophe in this country has devastated many families and sad stories abound. But one very sad aspect of the situation is below the radar screen for many: the fate of the beloved family pet. It is frequently inconvenient to find a new home, or even a relative to care for these animals when the family must find other accomodations. And many apartment complexes and even single family rental homes do not allow pets.

It is not uncommon for "trash-out" services to find pets that have been left behind and are near starvation. Other animals are just put outside and left to fend for themselves. The chances of a lifelong house pet surviving in the wild are slim.

There is no question that the current housing situation has wreaked havoc on many American families. Literally millions of families have been forced to leave their homes. In the chaos of a foreclosure, there are obviously many concerns: Where we will go? What do we do with all our stuff? Can I find a landlord that will accept me after a foreclosure? Will my children be traumatized by the move? On and on, the anxieties mount. If illness, job loss, or divorce is a part of the picture, the stress increases by orders of magnitude. Although I don't condone abandoning an animal to freeze or starve, I can only imagine the stress level of some of these people.

If you or someone you know is agonizing over what to do with pets in these circumstances, there are numerous local rescue operations here in Northern Nevada that will help. Perhaps the best is Washoe County Regional Animal Services on Longley Lane. They are a first rate organization in my opinion and experience. Animals are very well treated and they have one of the highest save rates in the country for animals brought in to their facility. They work closely with the Humane Society and other citizen groups to arrange adoptions for animals that are not claimed by their owners. They also perform a number of other services, such as microchip implants, dog licensing, and prevention of animal cruelty. So please don't feel there are no alternative to abandonment; your pets are your responsibility and are counting on you for their welfare.

This is an unfortunate truth.  I had a house last summer that would have broken your heart.  It actually drew the news out to it, it was that pathetic.

Linda, we have some no kill shelters here that people could turn to for help and advice.  They are getting a bit crowded at times but will also help to find foster families for the pets until they can be adopted.   It's such a sad thing when a family pet is left behind to fend for themselves.

Linda, on New Years Eve we were at someones home, a small condo, really for a single person. But a sibling of the owner lost everything and moved in, the bed was partitioned off in a small corner of the kitchen. We had a great time, good food, good company, all was fine. Until we were invited to look at photos on the computer. Photos came up of 2 dogs, the sibling who had lost everything owned them. He did find people who took them in and love them well, but it was such a harsh reality, it was a very sad moment in the evening.

Great reminder. Many people just don't know what to do, or are overwhelmed with family issues.

Andrea - That is a difficult way to live. I hope the sibling is able to pull it back together. Sleeping in someone's kitchen is amusing when you are in college; as an adult, not so much. I am glad he was able to find a good home for his dogs at least.

Linda - This is such sad and heartbreaking tragedy.  As a long time pet mama, the stories of abandoned pets is just heartwrenching.  I have periodically blogged about local rescues and shelters down here in Los Angeles & Ventura counties.  There really is no reason to leave a pet in the home to starve and die alone.

Donne - You are so right, there is no reason, there are plenty of people eager to help and prevent this tragedy. But I think people don't know about it, or at least don't think of it in the middle of what is likely total chaos. So folks like us just have to keep reminding them. I can't imagine any pet owner wouldn't want to do the right thing if they could.

Linda..... that must be a picture of your kitty..... looks just like my kitty that disappeared from Truckee 7 years ago..... I had a delivery truck bring new furniture to my home.... I am sure my cat jumped in, she use to do that to visiting friends and the truck drove off with her....maybe to jump out at the next stop or in Reno.... I never saw Jasper again....  Thanks for bringing this problem to our attention in the light that someone may be able to help a beloved pet to find a new home.

Hi Teri - So sorry to hear about Jasper! I hope that she found a new home wherever destiny took her. And yes, that is my kitty, Oakley. He came from PAWS (Plumas Animal Welfare) - they were having an adopt-a-thon at PetsMart here in town. He was a feral kitten about 6 months old when I got him. He's still pretty leary of strangers.

So kind that you give Oakley a home.  I had a great dog for 10 years, a australian shepard & lab mix.... a beautiful dog named Oakley!  My dog, Buckley ( a family last name), is 9 yrs. old yellow lab and a great companion!
