Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh, my! (Scratch the tiger)

Unless you've been living in a yurt on the plains of Inner Mongolia for the last 72 years, you've seen The Wizard of Oz.  Multiple times.

And I'm sure you remember this iconic exchange:

Dorothy: Do you suppose we'll meet any wild animals?
Tin Woodsman: Mm, we might.
Scarecrow: Animals that eat... s-traw?
Tin Woodsman: Some, but mostly lions, and tigers, and bears.
Dorothy: Lions?
Scarecrow: And tigers?
Tin Woodsman: And bears.
Dorothy: Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh, my!

I don't usually get startled when showing houses.  But as I turned a corner in a mostly vacant house yesterday, I was greeted by this:

Lion rug

Yes, that is a real lion skin run in the empty living room.  Real teeth and real claws still on the paws.

Now it's been a while since I have done any "dead animals in your home"  posts.  So many of the dead animals are repetitive, like deer heads.

But this one was a new one for me!  And in the other corner of the empty living room?

bear skin

Yes.  A bear.  Or, more accurately, a folded bear skin.  Also real.  The only think this house was missing was a tiger.  But it did have a zebra skin and a stuffed eland head in the family room!

Around these parts, your dead animals are not selling points!  They're highly personal items that can be quite controversial and should be put away while trying to sell your home!

What magnificent animals to be treated like that.  I'm no animal lover as you would think but some are hunted for meat to consume but to have them for rugs and such is not a good thing

Richard, While I DO NOT consider myelf to be an animal rights activist I DO consider this to be a mistake. What a great way to alienate potential buyers.

I think these examples would have sent Dorothy hurrying back to Kansas, screaming all the way.

Richard - Did you check for cameras - maybe you were being punked!

Or

Maybe the sellers where going for a safari look, thinking it would leave an impression with potential buyers. And it would - they'd be speed dialing PETA!

I hate animal skins!!! However I think they are usually very expensive... Wonder why they left them? seems they would be afraid of them getting stolen... I listed a log cabin last year that had about 15 different animals (the whole animal, stuffed) in the house... it was creepy.... there were 3 bears and various other animals... poor things...

Kristine - That's a great idea -- we should start a Real Estate Candid Camera!

Sheila - I'm sure a full lion skin is worth a lot.  The house was full of a lot of odd detritus.
