When I opened up the email that my Father forwarded me, I read every word of someone else's idea on why being a Steeler Fan is the right thing to be. I read on why the work ethic, culture, toughness, and fact that Franco's beard should have a stoic place on Bradshaw's head deserves a place in the annals of any Infomercial spouting a cure for Baldness.
But I'm a Steeler Fan for different reasons:
- That's the way I grew up. It's kind of like growing up in a religion of sorts. And as you grow older, you either identify with it or find another thing. I never found another thing I can identify with more than Steeler Football.
- Lynn Swann took Ballet. Come on, that's thinking outside the box ... especially for a man dealing with other men (much larger) who want to kill him from a physical standpoint. Ad agio, my friend.
- Year after year they lose damn good players to other teams. However, they find a way to replace them with better ones. With an organization, any organization, it's good business to admire loyalty and always be creating new stars.
- The Rooneys. Yup, The Rooneys. They are the 77 year-old beer store who still quenches the thirst.
- It beats being a Pirate Fan.
- I don't mind giving the other guy "Kudos" on a job well done. While I hate losing at anything, you can learn a lot by recognizing what you aren't quite yet.
- Our Dynasty is wrapped up in dominating, but not really. Think about it ... most, if not all, Steeler Victories were added silver hairs to any avid fan. We win, but we do so without pomp, only circumstance.
- With the alleged controversey surrounding Roethlisberger this year, they played defiant in his absence. I won't rationalize for one iota what he may or may not have done (frankly, the fact that it came out probably means he wasn't being a good boy) ... and it has gave the detractors ammunition and the fan-base one more excuse along the merry way ... but let's be honest, he is the best at what he does. Peyton, Brady, Brees, and the other guy over in San Diego ... take heed. He is damn good at what he does and if the organization has anything to do with it, he'll be a good boy going forward.
- Remember Abrocrombie? I do too. He was the guy behind Mark Malone during the days where we just sucked. We took Abrocrombie over Marino in the draft. We thought Marino partied a bit too hard. I don't regret all that, Chuck Noll was our coach in those days. Chuck Noll was a great one, at that. He was our Reagan. Great, at times, but needed to go (get out) at some point ...
- Which brings me to Green Bay vs. Pittsburgh, 2011. It doesn't get much more historical. And Green Bay is the hottest team in the NFL. The Steelers are the best team still playing. Seems like an interesting match-up. I'm a Steeler Fan because we win these types of historical things. And if we don't, nice job, Pack!
