MMM Good! Flavors that Work!

Did you ever read a recipe and think, "Those flavors don't sound like they work together"?  Just about every Saturday, during my morning cup of coffee, I like to watch the Foodnet channel to get some inspiration for meals I might want to cook during the weekend.

I tuned into Claire Robinson of Five Ingredient Fix a little late but just in time to see her showing off a really delicious-looking chicken recipe.  (I looked for the recipe so I could link it, but don't know the name of it.)  I printed off the recipe - minus the name of the recipe - and proceeded to make it for dinner.

The ingredients included:

  • thick cut bacon
  • 1 whole chicken, quartered
  • kosher salt and black pepper

Sounds good so far, right?  Then, she added the following:

  • 1 fennel bulb
  • 1 bottle dark beer
  • apple cider vinegar

Now I ask you - Would you think all of this would taste good together?  I'm adventurous in the kitchen so I gave it a try.  Oh, my goodness what that ever good! I was so pleasantly surprised, that I am now thinking that I need to start looking outside the box more often.

What ingredients have you ever cooked with that, at first glance, don't really look like they actually would go together but turned out to be delicious?

Yesterday I was at an ice cream place that had chocoate ice cream, with cayenne pepper.  Nope.  No way.  Not the kind of hot chocolate I wanted.  Good luck and thanks for the post!  Have a GREAT week!

I have a killer Guacamole recipe that uses chili powder and Coriander among other things not so unusual like garlic, tomato and onion

Hi Cheryl - You really should try the chocolate with cayenne.  It's really good.  Not at all what you might think.

Hi Mary - I love a good Guac but have never put chili powder or coriander in it.  Sounds interesting, though.

I love chili made with chocolate or cocoa. Sometimes, things are better than they sound.

I agree, Toni.  But there are some things I won't try no matter how hard someone tries to convince me otherwise - like chocolate-covered grasshoppers.

Interesting. How much apple cider vingar did you use? How fast of a meal was it?
