Tonight, at 8:30 p.m. your time, people all around the world will recognize Earth Hour 2011 by turning off the lights. It started as a recognition of climate change, but it's also a way to realize that artificial lighting, itself, is a form of pollution. So, tonight, turn off all unnecessary lights (and think really, really hard about what is "necessary") for one hour and go out and look up and enjoy the natural night sky in all its glory. This is our birthright, after all - do we really want to sell it for a mess of pottage?
For more information about practical and inexpensive ways to eliminate light pollution (beyond just turning off the lights), check out International Dark Sky Association.
We're all about home. And this is the biggest part of our home.
