Don't Forget To Turn Out The Light!

Night Sky Knickohr

Tonight, at 8:30 p.m. your time, people all around the world will recognize Earth Hour 2011 by turning off the lights.  It started as a recognition of climate change, but it's also a way to realize that artificial lighting, itself, is a form of pollution.   So, tonight, turn off all unnecessary lights (and think really, really hard about what is "necessary") for one hour and go out and look up and enjoy the natural night sky in all its glory.  This is our birthright, after all - do we really want to sell it for a mess of pottage?

For more information about practical and inexpensive ways to eliminate light pollution (beyond just turning off the lights), check out International Dark Sky Association.

We're all about home.  And this is the biggest part of our home.

Or once the lights are out maybe a glass of wine and conversation with the spouse around candlelight.

We enjoy sitting out here at Canyon Lake during the spring and summer. A great time to enjoy the outdoors, the starry sky and the wildlife that comes for a visit each evening. But, after awhile we have to come in and put out a blog here on AR or make a few comments.

Have a great week. Carl Winters

Tricia, what a wonderous blog post.  There are so many beautiful things Mother Nature has put in our universe.  Somehow, we continue to block them from view... both visually, and emotionally/psychologically/spiritually as well.

What a great picture !

Question:  Is there any website that you can give me a link to... that has a camera/telescope trained on the sky/universe that shows views like the one in your post ?  I would love to be able to tune it in... and perhaps have it as a live "screen saver."  Thanks so much...
