Is it proper to wish someone a Happy Easter; however we can not wish them a Merry Christmas?
I do not celebrate "Easter" and do not like people wishing me a Happy Easter. Over the years, I've succumbed to the "merry christmas" thing as a generalization over all the holidays in December, so it doesn't bother me as much anymore.
I say celebrate every holiday, whether is is one that applies to you or not. I proudly announce Merry Christmas, Happy this or that. I wish people would stop whining about this and celebrate life, we are all different thank Goodness!!
It is proper to do both. They have evolved to secular holidays. Christmas is a designated national holiday. I still can't figure out how a holiday celebrated on the first Sunday following the first full moon following the vernal equinox, and named after the goddess of fertility, can be looked at as a Christian religious holiday. True, the resurrection of Jesus is celebrated on Easter, but it is not Easter.
I tell people Happy Easter and Merry Christmas...tired of being politically correct for everyone else in the world. :-)
Mike,
Thanks for you comments. Would that be the same as the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring?
You can wish Happy and Merry holidays to anybody! At the very least I can't see it being more offensive than "Have a Nice day" LOL.
People get so touchy, but I think the context means more than the words anyway. If you wish someone a Happy Easter because you wish their family well, then there is no reason for that person to get upset unless they really have nothing better to do with their time than to cause a fuss over something.
Richard, I say 'Happy Easter' and 'Marry Christmas' to everyone. I am not trying to convert them to anything; I am wishing them a happy day. I also wish my Jewish friends 'Happy Hannukah' and friends with other religious beliefs the appropriate 'happy' for whatever days are important to them. If there are other holidays on which people would like me to wish them well, they need to tell me which days are important to them and I will be happy to wish them well on those days.
When people wish others Happy Easter or Merry Christmas, there is no offense meant. If no offense is meant, why is offense taken?
Matthew,
Thank you for your comments. I hope you have a great day and Happy Easter to you.
Dave,
Thank you for you comments. I am not sure why people take offense; however they do.
Happy Easter to you.
Happy Resurrection Day! Christ is Risen!
If this is offensive to some, it is meant to be for Christ said this...
"If the world hates you, realize that it hated me before it hated you." John 15:18
The Gospel is Good News. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.
If you hate good news you hate God. You can wallow in your sinful pool of hate and lies, or search for the truth and pray that God will draw you to His Love through Christ.
Rejoicing In His Name Always,
Paul
Richard, if you know someone does not celebrate Christmas or Easter, in my opinion it is not proper.
Lorrie,
Thanks for your comments. I find more people get upset with Merry Christmas. I sometimes do not know if they celebrate Christmas and or Easter.
