Okay, so the San Dimas/La Verne Soroptimist Group is on the move!  They are giving out grants and awards like crazy!

Personally I love this group.  I have a friend who belongs and every year I get to help with their "DRESS THE CHILD" event which they raise money for throughout the entire year.  The event is held in September for the new school year.  And I get the absolute priviledge of helping two or more children buy an entire outfit at the La Verne Target store.  So much fun!

But I digress, back to the story at hand.  The annual fundraiser, "VIVA SOROPTIMIST!" for San Dimas/La Verne Soroptimist was help at the Avalon Complex at the Pomona Fairplex.  The monies they make from this event go to help fund the service projects the Soroptimists do in our community.  This year more than $8000 was raised.

The Soroptimists handed out teacher awards in the Bonita Unified School District.  This school district covers both the San Dimas and La Verne cities so it is quite fitting.  The awards were presented to fourteen teachers at the monthly school board meeting.  Projects from these grants ranged from a new set of novels for the fourth graders to "Handwriting without Tears" a program for elementary school children to new chef coats for the cooking classes.

Four young women were awarded the "VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD" for their service to the community.  The award is named after the very first Soroptimist president in 1921.  The goal of this award is to acknowledge women between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteer in the community to help improve the lives of women and children.  These young ladies were given awards ranging in amount from $50 TO $500.

And last, but certainly not least, the "Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Award" was given.  This award helps give women the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects.  Women chsen must be the sole support of their families and be enrolled in an educational program, whether college classes or a vocational skills program.  The cash award may be used to offset any costs incurred in obtaining their education including books, childcare and transportation.  This year the recipient is a single mother with a three year old son who is enrolled in a Speech and Language Pathology program.  Her long-term goal is to become a Licensed Speech Therapist.  Currently she works part-time at a local bank while pursuing this dream.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of the people recognized and good luck in all their endeavors!
