Who put the "ah" in Real-ah-tor?!?

The word "REALTOR®" (with two syllables) patented in 1948, is a registered collective membership mark that identifies a real estate professional who is a member of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® and abides by its strict Code of Ethics.

Not sure who or when the "ah" was placed in the middle of REAL"ah" TOR®, but it's time to stop mispronouncing who we, collectively as a professional affiliation are!

Recently, I attended a video conference for real estate professionals in Los Angeles. Dawn Wells, perhaps better known as Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island was one of the guest speakers, who eloquently delivered a presentation on camera presence.  In the course of her talk, she professed her love of real estate - having owned 11 properties at one time.  During her talk on stage, she described her experience with "Real-ah-tors."  After her talk, she very graciously took a photo with me, at which time I asked her if I could give her a tip.  Upon sharing the correct pronunciation of "REALTOR®" with her, she immediately felt that all the real estate professionals in the room must not have believed her credible!  When I told her that many in our industry pronounce it that way, she thanked me with a big smile and a hug. That's right, Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island!

So the next time you're at a video conference, the office or stranded on a desert island, and a co-worker, friend or celebrity mispronounces your professional affiliation, kindly let them know, it's pronounced REALTOR® (with two syllables!)  But, don't always count on getting a big hug, cause you might just end up with a big "huh" instead.

Can you guess this REALTORS® answer to the question, "Mary Ann or Ginger?"

Sometimes they pronounce lender - "Lendor".

Doesn't bother us, because it sure beats "Dumb Ass".

Have  good one!

Thanks for clearing that one up! I was actually thinking about that yesterday as I think I have always said real "a" tor by habit. Aw shucks...I will have to retrain myself now....don't want to sound unedumacated!!!

You're kidding, seems kind of silly to me to get hung up on how anyone pronounces any one word.

Great Post!  I know an attorney who emphasized the "tor" part to make it clear how to pronounce the word, I know that he has gently influenced a lot of former Real AH tors.

Gotta love the American language with all it's comedic misspoken variations, regionally influenced or otherwise.

Less forgivable is the TV sportscasters' inevitable rendition of "athlete" as "ath-uh-leet."

In reply to Jay, "I agree that REALTOR® is a Registered trademark. Thank you for your astute observation and comments...all busting aside ;@}

In response to Phil, the question wasn't "who is hotter?"  The question was simply, "Mary Ann or Ginger?"  Which, could be in reference to their personalities, right?

Keep those comments coming, I think we're on to something here!

Love this post and just one more thought....if you want to technically correct, when you write it, use all CAPS and put the registered trademark at the end.

Type REALTOR then hold down the "ALT" key and type 0-1-7-4 then let go of ALT.

You will end up with REALTOR® and make the lawyers responsible for protecting that registered trademark very happy too!

Good job Robert...  I agree totally.  I once said the the Governor of the Great State of Nevada.  It's REALTOR sir.  It's not REAL-I-TOR.  There is no 'I' in it.  He looked at me and said, "my mother was a REALTOR and she would turn over in her grave if she knew I said that.  Thank you for correcting me."  I saw him several times over the next few years and he always remembered that conversation.  We became friends.

I think less than 50% of people (including REALTORS®) know how to pronounce this word.  Quite annoying.

Great post, also a pet peeve.  You almost make it sound like it has a southern drawl though, which makes it acceptable...  Agree with Ben that it beats "Dumb Ass" lol!

Hi Robert- that was brave of you. Guess you were at the point where you couldn't stand to hear "REAL-AH-TOR" any longer.

When people pronounce REALTOR incorrectly I tend to pause for a few seconds before continuing the conversation. I will take your advice and make the correction........IT'S AMAZING HOW MANY PEOPLE MISPRONOUNCE REALTOR.. WITH THE RECENT NATIONAL COMMERCIALS ADVERTISING THE BENEFITS OF HOME OWNERSHIP & THE PROMPT TO CONTACT YOUR LOCAL REALTOR TODAY- one would think that people that mispronounce REALTOR make the correction when they speak of REALTORS.

I know someone that said "incent-ta-tive" instead of "incentive"- and after a few times I had to correct her; I JUST COULDN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE! I think I did it because we had become pretty friendly.

Robert:

Up here in Northern Ohio, I'm wondering who put the "I" in REALTOR®, because we all know finalizing a transaction is a team effort, right?

In Ohio, like Sharon in Texas and Corrine in Illinois, people often say Real-i-tor and real-i-ty. I always have to bite my tongue to keep from asking "And how do you spell that?"

Robert, great post! Kudos to you for mentioning this... it's one of my MAJOR pet peeves! Shouldn't we know how to pronounce our own profession??

In real estate my close friends know this is a big pet peeve of mine. Sadly some people don't want to know how #$%^ they sound.

I've even seen local brokers, on their TV ads, mispronounce the word. Unbelievable.

I wonder if it is a matter of where people live and such.  There are areas where different words are pronounced differently.  I roll with it.  No big deal to me.

You're so right Amy.  Many people who are linguistically challenged, are also the most defensive about it.  While I have no desire to be disrespectful, I do try to find humorous ways to subtly bring awareness to the subject.  "No" what I mean?
