Imagine being whisked from the baking heat of the dry desert floor to the refreshingly cool climes of a pine-studded forest in a mere matter of minutes. Francis F. Crocker did, three-quarters of a century ago.

In 1935, Crocker was a young electrical engineer with a dream. Standing at the foot of the magnificent San Jacinto Mountains, he envisioned a series of towers and cables pulling a tram car up the steep cliffs of Chino Canyon. Hampered by politics, personalities, and a couple of wars, 30 years passed before he realized his vision.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway’s doors slid open for the first time on Sept. 14, 1963, after overcoming engineering challenges so great that it was dubbed the “eighth wonder of the world.” Today, the tram is easily one of the most popular desert attractions, with the introduction in 2000 of the world’s largest rotating tram cars.

While the tram draws visitors in all seasons, summer is a great time to visit. Summer passes are valid until Aug. 31. Pass holders enjoy unlimited tram rides, discounts at Peaks Restaurant and Pine Café, and more. Take a trip to the top and explore 54 miles of hiking trails, camping, and picnicking areas available within the 14,000-acre Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness Area. And don’t forget the sheer thrill of the ride itself!

Kathy, what a great localism post. This looks like a great place to go hiking. Especially if it's that cool at the top!
