No Greater Love...

Memorial day is a day when we celebrate and honor the lives our servicemen and women. A day to reflect those ever faithful servants who, like the faithful Shepard, Memorial Day 2011laid down their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms that we have today. Let us remember as well, the love that these brave men and women had for each other and for us all.

Love. There are many events throughout the calendar year that focus on and are dedicated to love and loved ones. Often, when we think of these celebrations, thoughts turn towards more traditional holidays such as Valentines Day, Mother's Day, Father's day and Easter. These are holidays when we rekindle the sparks and flames of romance or reflect on the love that only Moms and Dads can give. There are others; but to me, none speak more of love than Memorial day.

The man from Nazareth said it best, when he said, "No greater love has he, who lays down his life...". Not too much thought is given in this regard, as we pack our coolers with pop, beer and dogs and head out to a family outing or gathering with friends. Our military personnel and their immediate families live with this thought in the back of their minds, daily.

Those whom we honor today, lived, laughed and loved. They loved to do the same
Memorial Day 2011things we do; walk in the park, play with the kids; spend time with family, cuddle with a loved one, tell stories and toast marshmallows over an open fire. They enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. They loved. They epitomized love in its truest form - "No greater love..."

It was penned by one more gifted in words than these of your humble servant, that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Look deeply into the eyes of someone who has faithfully served this Nation and you will see eyes of love. Look into the windows whose curtains are drawn to mask the rigors and hardships of war, the pomp and circumstances of military life and the hierarchy of command. If you are lucky and look deep enough, you will see eyes of love that are dedicated to preserving our standards of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness…

Sadly, the light that once shown brightly in the eyes of our defenders has been extinguished. However; it still shines brightly as we reflect upon their acts of heroism. Kindled by the fire burning in the hearts and memories of those who knew them best, the light of the fallen illuminates the torch of freedom, that we as a Nation, hold so dear to our own breasts. Take a deep look into the eyes of someone who has served this Country, if you are lucky, you will get a glimpse into the same loving eyes of whom we respectfully honor today…

Today days post, was written in memory of Thomas, Richard, Wayne, Eddie, Wyatt, Robert and the others in my platoon who did not come home…

Late in the day to respond, but respond I must. I am of the age where many of my friends served in Vietnam. When I had the honor to look into the eyes of those who returned, I was humbled and thankful to be in their presence. Eloquently put. Thanks for your thought!

Howdy and evening to you Michael

Michael,
way to many folks do not stop to think about way and how Memorial Day came about. Like the fact that this was first called Decoration Day, for remembrance for those who had died in our Nation's Service. All us Veterans really need to help re-educate and to help remind all Americans about the true meaning of Memorial Day. Your mighty fine blog post, sure can help to do that.

I'm sure mighty glad that you made it back! Welcome home my friend!

Have a good one
Dale

Michael, I just saw Rob's re-blog and am thankful for it...here's what I wrote that your last picture reminded me of:

Beautiful, beautiful....Rob. Last nite, my husband and I watched a true-life story of inspiration that we'd only caught partly last year. It is called Taking Chance and stars Kevin Bacon in one of his most moving roles....about a young man that Kevin's character volunteers to "take home" after he died in combat and shows what that all entails, start to finish. It is a story about Chance Phelps.

Incredible.

This young man truly was a hero and he touched many lives.  This is only one simple story that I'm sure can be told and retold with the same impact as your photos.
