Burn the Candle at Both Ends Without Getting Burnt Out!

It’s becoming more common.  We’re seeing real estate agents who are tackling the real estate industry and another job at the same time.  Whether they’re dabbling in real estate on the side, or they’re an agent who’s pursuing a passion for a side career; it’s an ambitious pursuit!

You’ll soon find that running your real estate business while building a side business, or going full force with your day job and showing homes on the weekend will mean having to burn the candle at both ends.  So, how can you pursue two careers while putting forth your best efforts and avoid getting burnt out?  Here are seven tips, as pointed out on Entrepeneur.com, that will help you in your endeavors!

1. Get your family involved. Whether it's answering the phone, stuffing envelopes or putting together orders for your non-real estate related business; giving family members the chance to help out is a great way to get more accomplished in less time. This will also help them feel more involved with your business!  Make sure, however, to avoid putting too much pressure on them to be involved.  You don’t want them to get burnt out on your business.

2. Be ready to give up personal time. You won't have much time for TV, reading or other hobbies you used to enjoy. Be sure the sacrifice is worth it, or both your job and your business will suffer.

3. Focus on the task in front of you. When you're at work, focus on work. Don't let thoughts of your business distract you.

4. Make the most of every minute. Use lunch hours or early morning to make phone calls. Use commuting time on the train to catch up on paperwork.

5. Take advantage of time-zone differences and technology. If you do business with people in other states or countries, make time differences work to your advantage by calling early in the morning or after work. Use faxes and e-mail to communicate with clients at any time.

6. Don't overstep your boundaries. Making calls on company time or using your employer's supplies or equipment for your own business purposes is a big faux pas. Of course if your main job is a real estate agent; you’re your own boss and have the flexibility to work on your side business whenever you want!

7. Be honest. Only you can assess your situation, but in many cases it's best to be upfront with your boss about your sideline business. As long as it doesn't interfere with your job, many bosses won't mind. You'll also gain by being honest rather than making them feel you have something to hide.  Also, be sure to be honest with yourself.  If you begin to sink under the weight of both jobs and aren’t being successful in either; consider where you can step back or how you can adjust to ensure you’re not getting overwhelmed.

These seven tips should help you as you pursue your passions!  Being a real estate agent and having a side career, or venturing into real estate part time can both work.  You just have to set clear goals and know that your life will be much more full because of it.
