Carbon Monoxide Poison Symbol

A new law went into effect as of July 1, 2011, requiring homeowners to install carbon monoxide detectors in all single-family California homes with an attached garage, fireplace or a fossil fuel-burning heater or appliance.

Nationwide, carbon monoxide poisoning claims about 500 lives every year and sends thousands of people to the hospital.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood or charcoal is burned. If the appliances that burn the fuel are properly used and maintained, the amount of CO produced is generally not hazardous.

At moderate levels of CO poisoning, the symptoms include severe headaches, dizziness, nausea, fainting and mental confusion. Many of these same symptoms are milder at lower levels of CO. Residents should never ignore symptoms, especially if more than one person is feeling them.

However, improper use of appliances can result in deadly levels of CO. Hundreds of people die every year from CO poisoning caused by malfunctioning or improperly used fuel-burning appliances. Even more die from the CO produced by idling cars.

To prevent CO poisoning, residents shouldn’t idle the car in the garage, even if the outside door is open; never use a gas oven to heat a home, even for a short time; never use a charcoal grill indoors; and have home fuel-burning appliances regularly serviced by a professional.

Prices can vary greatly with these devices. In shopping for the units we have experienced some scarcity at the lower price levels. WalMart and The Home Depot still have inventories for the lower cost devices.

Thanks for the important reminder Eugene :) I was working on a condo and thinking I had to rush out and get a carbon monoxide detector and then realized that if applied to SFR.

Carbon monoxide detectors are devices where you really do get what you pay for. Buy the most expensive one because that will also be the best one. You don’t want the cheap one that tells your relatives that you died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
