Who Owns the Mountains? Man or Beast?

Summertime in the Rockies brings lots of people out to enjoy camping in the mountains.

There have been numerous reports lately about the ongoing battle between man and beast.

This past weekend, there was a news story about some teens who were camping in their tents only to be woken up by a bear ripping through the side of the tent.  One of the boys was scratched by the bear but they both made it to safety without further incident.

bearThe park workers searched for the bear and reported that they "Put Down" a bear matching the description that the boys gave.  Male bear, approximately 200 pounds.

While I am sorry for the boys, my heart sank a little at the idea of "Putting Down" the bear.  First of all, how do they know this was the bear and why did they have to kill it?  Did he have distinguishing marks which made him stand out from the other bears?  Tatoos?  Glasses? Red Hoodie???

Last night I heard a news story of a man who was walking through an unpopulated, grassy area in the foothills with his two year old toddler.  He let the toddler run up ahead of him alone.  A coyote ran up on the toddler and knocked him over and bit him in the back.

Now they are searching for a coyote matching the description so they can "Put Him Down". coyote

What description would that be?  Wanted: a Wile E Coyote last seen chasing a funny looking bird yelping Beep Beep.

I feel bad for the toddler of course, but what rights do the animals have?  If they find this Wile E Coyote, couldn't they just trap him and move him to another part of the foothills where parents wont let their toddlers wander aimlessly alone?

I feel that both are part of the mountains and can co-exist. Some Humans just need to remember that we don't solely own it.

Hi Belinda - I'm sure you have seen many tourists here do stupid things with the animal life, as I have - walking up to the elk during mating season, climbing on cliffs after the bighorn sheep, bad camping practices, etc. It's always a bad disconnect for me when the animals get punished for being themselves. There are certainly times when animals need to be put down - the mountain lion watching the elementary kids at recess for two days at Big Thompson school was too unnerving for any other solution, probably - but this response has become way too automatic.

I do not envy those who have to make that decision. I feel for all those involved, including the animals!

Hi Belinda, people need to respect the woods and all of the wildlife.  I feel bad that these things happened, but to go out and hunt and put down an animal because it is a male bear, coyote and etc. is wrong.  There has to be a better solution.

Putting animals down for what they are breed to do instinctually is a shame.  Neither of these animals should be put down.  That's riduculous.

I’ve also never understood why they find it necessary to kill an animal that was only being an animal, in many cases protecting its territory or its offspring.

Obviously man does, but someday Mother and Father Nature will have their say in the matter.

Hi Belinda - First of all, I LOVE your new Blog Header!!!!  The pix of your pup are awesome...great job!

I agree with your point of view on this issue with man vs. wilderness.  Those animals should NOT have been hunted and killed.  Man can be so senseless and cruel.  I believe that the animals were here on this planet first and we as 'humans' have been slowly taking over the wilderness areas.....so, what's a wild animal to do???

It's a good question but not an easy one. I don't have an answer.
