Need to Cool Down Your Hot Car? Try this Japanese Car Door Trick

Reblogger Debbie Walsh
Real Estate Agent with SHAHAR Management

With this heat our cars have been reaching temperatures of 120 degrees and more inside.  Here is a trick Barbara Altieri heard on the radio for helping cool your hot car down and I will definitely be trying it this week!

Original content by Barbara Altieri RES.0781237

It’s been crazy hot here in CT the last few days with a few more scorchers coming up.

I’ve been in NY twice the last few days and have had to park my car both times for several hours in the hot sun.  Just walking to my car from a distance and thinking about how hot it was going to be inside when I got there made me sweat.

So there I was…faced with extreme built-up heat of probably 120 screaming hot degrees or more when I got into the car.

So what does everyone usually do when faced with the HOT car?  They usually get in, open up the windows, start the car, turn the a/c on and wait until it gets to be a tolerable temperature while breaking into a mild sweat.

Driving back to CT I heard this little ‘trick’ on a NY radio station.

When you’re faced with a hotter than you-know-what car interior, open the driver door, and put down the opposite front passenger window completely.  Then from the outside open and close the driver car door five times.

The science behind this is that you will be pulling OUT the hot air in the car by the open/close door action and pulling IN the ‘cooler’ air. Well, the 'cooler' air is still hot, but 95 degree cooler air is better than 120+ degrees, I guess.

Does this make sense.....or is it just nonsense?

Guess you have to try it. It just might be a really ‘cool’ trick!

(I looked this up when I get back and found it is a Japanese door trick to quickly get the hot air out of an oven-like car.)

Hello Debra,

In this heat, you have to try everything.  I am fortunate in that my auto has not one but two a/c systems...it cools down fast!  Thanks for the blog, have a great evening!

And I thought this was going to be along the lines of the Chinese Fire Drill!  ha, what a goof I am...but this little no-brainer trick may be worth it when we hit those temps. I always liked the 470 AC rule in rural America...open up all four windows and go SEVENTY miles per hour!

Hi Debra, It does make sense. The principle of a whole house fan used in a car would also make great sense. There should be one in every car. There should also be thermal window tinting changes when the sun gets hot.It gets darker. When the car reaches a certain temp inside, the ceiling vent fan would automatically turn on. Cars can now park themselves, they might as well be able to vent theselves. And I will bet within a year or two, we will actually see things like this.

OK, maybe 3 to 5 years would be more realistic. A year or two might be a little to aggressive, time wise.....for the invention.

Debra:  I think it is just common sense and will work....sometimes I open both doors, passenger and driver and then turn on the car to let the air circulate....same principal without the mysterious 5 time open and close! :)

Debra, thanks for the reblog.  Very interesting, and I will try it!  Our AC units really work great so it is very cold in a minute, but this is great for people w/o AC.

Hi Debra, Fun re-blog.  It probably works, but I can't help but think that this activity is something to occupy your time while the a/c cools down and begins to do its thing!  I will have to try it!

Thanks.
