"Why I Chose Real Estate"...Finding Home

Mom in the ArmyIt really isn't too hard to explain of why I chose Real Estate.  Some of this contest may even be considered cheating because what I will say will mirror a lot of what is in my profile already.  I chose Real Estate because Finding Home has always resonated deep within me.

I was born, February 1st, 1969 to Linda Beth (Gage) Rawson and William Howard Rawson in Anniston Alabama on the Army Base FT McClellan.  Both of my parents were in the Army; however, my mother had to get out when she becameBaby Brenda pregnant with me.  It was expected of women at that time to join the Army, find a husband, get pregnant and then get out.  My mother has always loved the Army and truly regretted having to get out.  As for my father...I didn't know him.  Apparently he was a mean drunk and hit my mother a lot, so when I was very young, she took me and we left.

My mother married again later on to a Marine named Kevin Lee Ryon and that ended up in divorce when I was around 7.  I didn't know him very well either.  Anyway, my mother was a very free spirit. We moved A LOT.  I have lived in such places as Athens Greece and Sudan, Africa when my mother was married to my stepfather, California, Rochester, New York with my grandmother, and I have even lived in a commune.  Remember the freespirit thing with my mom.  That is where I found my first hatred of the taste of powdered milk and tofu by the way.  We didn't stay long in the commune.  One day, my mother got a hair and decided that we would move to Albuquerque, New Mexico.  I was about 10 years old.  I, confused, thought we were going to have to live in a pueblo.  I soon found out that New Mexico was just like any other state, if a bit desert like :).

Even when we got to New Mexico and my mother found work, and a place to live, we never stayed in one place long.  We moved every Christmas.  I am serious...we would pack up the tree and haul it off to another area of Albuquerque.  You see...my mother was always trying to find home and I along with her.  When I was in middle school in my 7th grade year we found an apartment to live in on Mountain Rd, (it was the nicest place we had ever lived in), and I begged my mom if we

My Momcould stay in one place until I at least finished high school.  She agreed and I got to stay in the same place until I graduated.

Soon after I graduated high school, I joined the Army.  It was something my mom begged me to do after pretty much not doing anything else with myself...ah youth :).  After I joined the Army, my mother decided to move again at around...you Brenda Graduatingguessed it, Christmas :)!  She moved one other time into her very first home that she bought.  Brace yourselves...this part is sad.  Soon after she bought her first home, she found out she had lung and brain cancer.  She died 8 months later.  Before she died I remember her saying to me..."I finally got everything I wanted, and now it's being taken away from me."  That struck me very deeply and is bringing tears to my eyes even as I write it.  It seemed very unfair to me that this woman, who so desperately was searching for home, finally found it, only to be taken home somewhere else.  I am pretty sure it made me angry for a while.

So, on went my life in the Army.  As you know, we move every couple of years in the military.  Home is wear you hang your hat as we always would say.  Being in the Army I have been at home in some very interesting places, among them Iraq, Korea and Hawaii.  As miserable as some of those places were, they became my home for a while.  Home means a lot of different things to different people, but for me, home became where the people I loved and trusted were.  It included my husband and kids, but also included the many Soldiers that I have had to live with in various places.

So, you may be thinking, how does all of this segway into why I chose Real Estate?   I am getting there...:)..I believe the idea to become a Realtor® first kind of came to me when I was searching for the home my husband and I would buy in Colorado Springs.  I remember asking my Realtor® at the time, what it was like.  She told me I could work as hard or as easy as I wanted and it was up to me how much money I made in the business or something like that.  It's almost like it was this random thought.

I am sure it was around the time after I sold my first home in Hinesville, GA Me in Iraqwhile I was in Iraq and was thinking about leaving and selling my home in Colorado Springs that the idea of becoming a Realtor® really starting becoming solid in my mind.  I thought it would be or could be a career I could get into as I really wasn't interested in pursuing anything medical after the Army.  There wasn't any thought, honestly, that I would be making tons of money and just rolling in it and living some lavish lifestyle.  I honestly think that helping people find home just became something I deeply wanted to do.  It just appealed to me on some level I didn't understand fully at the time.

After we came here to San Antonio, TX, I was assigned as an Instructor at the Department of Combat Medic Training, I decided it was time for me to retire from the Army.  We had done a lot of moving around and my children have suffered through their mom being away from them for at least 2 years out of their lives and my husband for about 3.  We haven't been a complete, stable family for many years and I decided enough was enough.  They and I both needed to find stability and a home.  I then started pursuing my license as a Realtor® knowing deep in my heart that helping people find home is what I truly want to do.

It gives me personal satisfaction and joy when I am able to help someone find their home, first or otherwise here in the Guadalupe County or even Bexar County.  I also find extreme satisfaction in placing a home on the market and achieving a successful sale for my sellers when they have discovered that home isn't here in the San Antonio, Schertz, Cibolo or Selma Texas area and they have to move or they want a bigger home or smaller home (which I can help them find).  My website url (address) is www.findurwayhome.com and my personal catch phrase is "Helping You Find Home".  I chose those things because they hold such meaning for me and I want to portray that feeling to my clients.

I am thinking though that as I write this and I look upon some of my past that honestlyI didn't choose Real Estate so much as...I think it chose me.

Brenda my wife's last surviving aunt lives in Anniston, and worked as a civilian on that Army base.  We were there to visit her two years ago.

You took an interesting road to becoming a Realtor.
