Musings about Living in Texas

Portland Oregon Recently, I returned from a vacation in Portland, Oregon. To the left is a vew from a park hilltop. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL! Lush, green, occasional rain, very fresh fruit, eclectic people and places. I have lived in Texas my whole life and I started wondering why. Why live in a rustic, drought ridden environment when I could live in Portland.

North Padre Island Texas is soooo big and very diverse. I grew up in Corpus Christi which is on the Texas coast. We lived only 4 blocks from the water and I took it for granted. I just didn't realize that not everyone was privileged enough to be able to see the ocean every day. It's a small town and windy but where my immigrant grandparents and extended family settled when the escaped Russia and the Czar.

Houston Then my family relocated to Houston. It's a really large city with so much to offer in terms of culture and activities. Lots of great restaurants and shopping. Since it usually rains frequently, it is very green and lush but also hot and humid. Some of my family and friends are still there and we visit often. I do love Houston.

Austin About 25 years ago, my husband and I made the decision to move to Austin. Yes, we are in the middle of a drought and most everything is dried and brown but we like it here. There is much in culture, people and opportunities and I can visit other places any time. Texas is home and I'm glad to be back.
