The Harvest Hummingbird

The Harvest Hummingbird

Oh little jewel, little bird we adore.  Happy you make our hearts.

Tiny, yet fierce, we hear your chirps, it's music to our ears.

Yet to your kind, the message is clear - stay away, this nectar is mine!

Soon you'll be leaving, all but a few, following a migratory path.

Till then little friend, may your journey be safe, we'll see you in the Spring.

DEBB,

I love hummingbirds and that is a very good poem. Did you write it? If so great job. Good seg way into advertising your services.

Thanks for commenting on my rental in Katy blog. I really do not understand renting anywhere but when prices are so high and demand sky high time to buy finally has arrived at least I hope people finally get the idea.

Bob - nice to see my friend from Texas. I did write the little ditty to go with the post. At least 50 words! ;) And yes, got to have that call for action. (Migration)

Funny Mimi - It was an okay photo without the gold - but making it the Harvest Hummingbird gave life to the idea. Kismit. I enjoyed talking with you too. And I love the folks who I've met in the Rain - KS for sure.

As you well know I love my hummingbirds and taking pictures of them and they always make me smile. Now don't hide that nectar for the winter, it seems hummingbirds don't migrate according the Audubon society.

You did good to catch one sitting still. Always like to watch them flit about and fight over the nectar.

Todd,

Our Rufous and Annas stick around, but some of the others do leave.  I actually keep a feeder on a lightbulb contraption during our few freezes. I'll take a photo of it should I need to use it this winter. Probably will...:) Thanks for the visit  fellow nature lover.

Hi Than -

This guy sits in that tree quite often. He must feel pretty safe. I hope so.

Debb, hummingbirds have always been a fave of mine. One day I was gardening out in the front of my house and a brown colored one buzzed my head. I thought it was a huge bug but it was surprisingly a tiny hummingbird. The speed with which they flap their wings is amazing to me....

I have several hummingbird feeders and love to sit on the back deck and watch them.  They are so territorial but fun to watch as they protect their "turf".

Debb, I just noticed that mine are gone.  They have headed 'farther' south...  I have a full feeder just sitting there.  But like you said, they'll be back!  They are my faves...  We've had a family this year and the young ones were so much fun to watch.

Such a delightful prose you wrote...  I'm impressed!

Debb, boy Kristine sure summed it up. I have a deep and loving smile, too. That photo is a CLASSIC, Debb. That would be one I would use in some manner, either framed on a wall or in your posts, I dunno--it's just too beautiful to only see once.

And I have to say your tag line was terrific!

Gary - they are noisy and defy their size. I've been in the line of fire when they're dive bombing each other over a feeder or plant - they can be intimidating. Ha. North American hummers such as the Rufous ( this variety stays year round) have a wing beat of around 53 per second. Impressive.  :)

Anita - they can be fierce in protecting their turf (nectar supply). Glad you take the time to watch them in action.

Alexandra - I know any little creature is in great hands with you. Thanks so much for the video link. That's unbelievable - I can't imagine he can even fly with his "flags."  That's kind of sad - nature must know what she's doing.

Team St. Peter,

Hi Pam - yep, they will return. We do have several common varieties that stick around - but there isn't the activity level seen in Spring, Summer and Early Fall - so I miss them.  I keep a feeder out during extreme cold - and have to keep it thawed out. I'll be sure to post about it later in the year. Good to see you.

Oh Gayle - my dear friends in the Rain always have something nice to say. I really appreciate each one of the KS circle so very much. Isn't it a comfort to know we have such a wonderful group who care? I'm lucky and very grateful to know you. (Now, about that woman who needs to jump (get pushed) in the Lake -?  I'll need an update on that at some point)  Thinking of you...

Hi Debb~

I've been off working on my "Profile" for the past few days...so I almost missed this bit of beauty!

Capturing a hummingbird at rest and then also capturing the spirit of that moment, and then gently portraying all of this in words is a joy for me to behold. Thank you!

janeAnne - I know what you mean, it's easy to miss stuff in the Rain. I've got family coming in tomorrow for two weeks and I'm likely to be away from the computer more than usual. I hope I don't miss any good stuff. :)

Thanks for the visit - you know how much I appreciate you. D

We have hummingbirds year-round here although not as many during the winter months as during the summer.

I saw Todd's comment and was thinking that he might have an old Audubon book from the late '40s or '50s like my mom has. It also says that hummingbirds don't migrate, but their migration is well documented now. Most in the U.S. and Canada go to Mexico and Central America. We have a lot of Anna's Hummingbirds here in Southern California which do not migrate, probably because our weather is so nice anyways.

Debb, what a treasure this post is. You make our hearts sing. Sweet! I adore Hummies....they are so amazing. I had a baby fall out of a large Black Oak at Girl Scout camp and hit me on the head. It about knocked me out. We had to take the baby to the "Wildlife Rescue" people because it was so small. Our hummies are year round (Anna's) and fuss at us when they need more nectar water....quite fussy with us. We love it. Thank you for making me feel good tonight.....all warm and fuzzy!
