hummingbirds: The Sounds of Sage in Sonoma - 10/28/18 10:10 AM
You could not deny the activity going on dawn to dusk in the salvia (aka Sage) gardens at the home we were renting in Sonoma last week. Saliva is the largest genus of plants in the mint family. They are heat and drought resistant and a perfect choice for dry climates. Although, with nearly a thousand varieties, there's a salvia choice for nearly every part of the continental United States.

Some saliva plants are magnets for attracting pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. That was certainly the case for this variety. At first, I (Debb) thought it was Russian Sage, I have it at … (25 comments)

hummingbirds: Winter Hummingbirds - Helping our Tiny Neighbors Survive a Freeze - 12/15/16 06:35 AM
How to Help Anna's Hummingbirds Survive in Winter
We have four different types of hummingbirds in the Pacific Northwest, and Anna’s is the only one that doesn’t always migrate south to warmer spots for the winter. They used to, but biologists say over the last couple of decades that has changed. Prior to the 1930’s, it nested no farther north than San Francisco. However, a combination of plentiful nectar feeders and urban gardens seem to have lured them to overwinter in the colder climes of our region.
It’s also thought the Anna’s Hummingbirds are able to winter so far north because of their … (37 comments)

hummingbirds: Hummingbird Hopeful in Camas WA - Rufous or Anna's? - 02/24/16 11:36 PM
Rufous or Anna's at Our Camas Feeder?
(By Mfield, Matthew Field, http://www.photography.mattfield.com – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0)
We recently wrote about Rufous Hummingbirds our region. We’ve always known the Anna Hummingbirds winter over in the Pacific Northwest, but we were a bit surprised to learn some Rufous do too. My husband thinks a female Rufous may have visited our feeder this week, I suspect it’s a female Anna’s hummingbird.  Both are more drab in color than the males, but Anna’s have a sheen of green feathers along their sides, while the Rufous have a subtle red shading. Anna’s are a bit larger than the Rufous too. They … (14 comments)

hummingbirds: Hummingbird Hopefuls - Sightings and Migrations - 02/22/16 01:10 AM
Hopeful for Hummingbirds at our Camas ViewHome
Yesterday, we put up the first hummingbird feeder for our new home in the country. We know they are all over this area during spring and summer, but we were hopeful we could attract some to our feeder during this last part of winter. After all, spring is less than a month away, so our expectations are pretty high!
We did some research on our favorite bird web site, Journey North and confirmed the rufous hummingbird is very common in the Pacific Northwest from California to Southeastern Alaska - nesting farther north than any other hummingbird. There are sightings of the rufous (named … (17 comments)

hummingbirds: The Harvest Hummingbird - 10/19/11 03:23 AM
The Harvest Hummingbird

Oh little jewel, little bird we adore.  Happy you make our hearts.
Tiny, yet fierce, we hear your chirps, it's music to our ears.
Yet to your kind, the message is clear - stay away, this nectar is mine!
Soon you'll be leaving, all but a few, following a migratory path.
Till then little friend, may your journey be safe, we'll see you in the Spring.

Feeling the need to migrate? I'd love to show you the benefits of living in Camas, Washougal or Fishers Landing.  Let's explore your options.

hummingbirds: Exploring Clark County - A Reminder to Stop and Enjoy the Flowers - 07/29/11 12:55 PM
Exploring Clark County - A Reminder to Stop and Enjoy the Flowers It’s tough to kick back and relax in this crazy competitive world of ours. At times, it seems as if there's always somebody bigger, brighter or better equipped than we are to be successful. However, everyone of us has the capacity to be the best that we can be - and that should be good enough.
Personally, I think being the best-you-can-be, means not only living up to your full potential, but finding peace, love and happiness along the way.  And the best part, it’s an ongoing journey, … (22 comments)

hummingbirds: Hummingbirds and Humans - A Great Relationship - 05/15/11 08:39 AM
Hummingbirds and humans have a great relationship. They provide us with hours of entertainment, and we often provide them with extra nectar. We see hummingbirds year round in Clark County Washington but recently, the activity has increased and soon all the “snowbird varieties” will be returning. Hummingbirds drink nectar to maintain their metabolism, (wings flap an average of 53 times per second), primarily from flowers and sugar - water filled feeders. They also eat soft bodied insects and spiders for protein–in fact, they are actually pretty effective bug eating machines. But they do need the nectar to provide the the power necessary … (4 comments)
