The 160 acre site was deeded in 1843 to Richard Wiggins as part of the Armed Occupation Act. John May bought the property in 1855 and donated 15 acres to the county to be used as the county seat.

The 12 room, 4 story home was built in 1856 as a  a two story, four room home,  and was remodeled in the early 1900’s to its present Queen Ann, 7 gable style.

The May family lived in the home for several years, John May died in 1858 and his wife remarried several years later. She died in 1869 giving birth to Jessie May. Jessie died a few years later. It is said that some have heard the child crying for her mother. Both are buried on the grounds of the museum at an unmarked site.

Later acquired by Dr. Sheldon Stringer family sold it to the county to be used as a museum. The May Stringer House is on the National Registry of Historic Places.

The Museum is a non-profit organization and depends on donations and it’s wonderful volunteers to stay open and maintain it’s many (over 10,000) artifacts. It’s located at 601 Museum Ct., Brooksville, FL 34601

looks like those 2 in the second photo need to work on their tans a little.  With Halloween fast approaching, I bet the May Stringer House is getting plenty of activity...hopefully the non-paranormal kind.  ;-)

Toni,

Yikes, that is some great photo technique....LOL, if you ever visited the Del Coronado in San Diego, the basement part with all the celebrities who are no longer with us, is definitely haunted and has a touch of creepiness to it.  We have talked to some old timers who agree, another place is the dorm wing of the Hearst Castle, where Mr Hiearst insisted that couples who were not legally wed had to stay in separate rooms...definitely has haunted feeleing....LOL  We took my parents there, and they both said, there were remnants of spooks.  A

What a beautiful Victorian home.  I wouldn't be surprised if it was haunted by the family.  I'd want to stay there forever.

L&S - thanks!

Mary - as long as they are "friendly" it's okay by me.

Joni - it is a beauty of a house. And, not scary at all so you can visit.

Kymberly - I haven't asked them but I will :)

Anita - they do need a little vitamin D, don't they?

Endre - I hadn't given that any thought-maybe I should :)

Alexandra - I have been to the Del Coronado but didn't know that then. And, I have been to Hearst Castle. I guess my ghostly antenna wasn't working then either.

Patricia - isn't that amazing! I didn't know that digital cameras would pick that up.

Rob - We don't have many around either.

Dale - I enjoy visiting old homes that are inhabited by former residents too.

Kay - you're right, I wouldn't want to leave either.

Kwee - call ahead before you go because it's only open at specific times.

Thank you, Everyone, and have a spooky Halloween!

Hi Toni,

I actually did stop by earlier before a showing, but didn't have time to leave a comment. What an interesting history this house had! Just love old houses. This one is beautiful. So glad this one is preserved as a museum! I did follow the link, but honestly, couldn't hear the background voices. Interesting nonetheless!
