Halloween in a Resort Community on a Barrier Island ... from Ocean City, New Jersey

Our big Halloween event was held last Thursday when we had the annual parade.  This brings out children and families ... it's a tradition here in our small "off-season town" with only about 9,000+ population right now, and going down as many head off to Florida for the rest of the winter season.

So what does the night of Halloween bring?  It depends on your location around the community.  Most areas are considered second home locations so they get very little attention from children.  For example, going north from 34th Street would probably mean very few lights on by those living in OC ... even fewer children walking around.

Move down to the Rivera and the Bay area, and you will find many more year-round people.  Or further up into the Northend and Gardens where you will also find many more people.  So when we stay home, we always get a number of turn-outs ... but we also get a lot of children from all over the island.  So we can never be certain how much candy to have with us.  And we don't want to keep it around.

Some years we head out to dinner with many restaurants down here attracting children who "trick or treat" in those locations.  Or we visit friends on the Bay who always have their light on ... but they attract no children.

It's just a bit different in a resort community where almost every owner is in another location tonight ... and it's not quite the same as "the real world."  But on the positive side, we rarely have any major "tricks" played either.

Enjoy your Halloween!!             dap
