Desparately Seeking Thanksgiving

A s I closed up the Sunday paper this morning, I felt more than a little sad. It was filled with a kind of desparation advertising for all things Christmas. Fifty-two days before Christmas and the commercial onslaught has begun. Is there anyone else out there that remembers when Christmas lasted only a few weeks? When Thanksgiving was not something completely overshadowed by all the Christmas hoopla?

I have a couple of issues with the whole "HOLIDAY SEASON".  One is, a 2 month Christmas is just too darn long. The second is, Thanksgiving has been lost.

When I was growing up, Christmas was about a 3 week event. People didn't moan and groan about Christmas as if it were a term paper that needed to be completed, or a large tax bill that needed to be paid on December 25th. Gifts were far more modest, as were expectations.

Christmas was much more about people coming together to share a spirit of wonderment than buying each other gift certificates.

When did we decide we needed a HOLIDAY SEASON instead of just a HOLIDAY? Did we rob ourselves in the process? Christmas today seems like a party that just lasts just way too long.

I still remember my feeling of shock the first time I a saw a decorated Christmas tree the weekend after Thanksgiving. I thought, "Why in the world do they already have their tree up?"  Now we are numb to the fact Christmas ornaments are the next aisle over from the Halloween candy.

Finally, a plea for Thanksgiving: Here is the rare holiday that has managed to escape the whole gift giving obligation. It happens during the year's most brilliant season. Decorating only requires a walk in your backyard to pick up red leaves and shiny acorns, not a trip to the drugstore for a box of plastic ornaments.

The biggest obligation for this holiday might be to cook a turkey dinner, or contribute a pumpkin pie, making it possibly the most stress free holiday of the year. And without the need to open presents, the day is purely about being together. It is about sharing food around a candlelit table, sharing stories, watching football together, and enjoying the company of those you love.

Always, Thanksgiving has ushered in the Christmas season, but it used to be only a giddy anticipation on this day, with everything shiny and bright still packed away in boxes.  Today, Christmas has been in full swing for a month and Thanksgiving weekend is spent shopping like maniacs to "beat the rush".

This year, I encourage everyone to slow down and cherish Thanksgiving. No, it isn't a season, it is just a day. You won't get any presents, but you stand to gain something better than anything that can be purchased in a mall.  Gather with your family, look around, and be thankful.

Christmas will still come, this I promise.

Janet, like you, I treasure Thanksgiving.  But the first Saturday of December each year, I throw a huge party and have to put the tree up a little early.  I might postpone it this year until December 8th, just because if feels strange to hoist the tree in November!

I agree.  Christmas lasts way too long.  I figure the folks who spend mega-bucks on all the decorations for Christmas have to feel that they get their money's worth by leaving them up so long.  And if there is anything tacky, it's the Christmas lights left up all year so they won't have to do it again!

Stress-free?

Did you say Thanksgiving was "possibly the most stress-free holiday of the year"?  Are you kidding me? With all that lovely sweet potato pie, candied yams, and homemade cheesecake calling my name? And now my gym is holding a Biggest Winner contest to not gain anything over the holidays.  C'mon, Janet!

Seriously, though, I get your point...enough of the mass-marketing blitz starting in October already!

I always end up finding the Thanksgiven gathering more relaxing and enjoyable then the Christmas one, and I am a Christmas lover.  There is just so much less pressure, to act like you like the fushia sweater, to wonder if they really like what you gave, to feel the joy and wonderment if you really are mostly feeling like you spent too much again.  I always have such expectations for Christmas, I want to feel all Norman Rockwell and if I don't, I feel I lost something.  Thanksgiving on the other hand, my main expectation is I get to have turkey stuffing, and I have never been dissapointed yet.

Erica: I love that vision of dropping Christmas candy in a trick or treater bag. Hilarious!

Barbara: I looked at a house over the weekend and the owner claimed it had been staged. I noticed Christmas lights still up from last year and knew she was not telling the truth. Lights all year? Yes, tacky!!!!

I love Thanksgiving! I don't allow Christmas to creep in until after December 5th - just don't :) Your thoughts are perfect. On my blog you will see a "ticker" it is a countdown until Thanksgiving guest arrive :)

Lanette: Please don't tell me you find a day of stuffing yourself more stressful than Christmas! I refuse to believe you!!!

Beth: The whole gift giving thing has gotten just a little overwhelming. Especially when most of us strive to live less cluttered lives. I like the fact Thanksgiving has no gifts. Okay, you can bring me a bottle of wine if I cook the dinner. LOL

It is so refreshing to hear from someone who thinks like I do....I love Christmas as much as anyone but I've even seen Christmas decorations for sale in a store the end of August.  Way too early for my taste.

I am an appraiser and as such I go into a lot of homes...I've seen Christmas trees (artificial) in homes before Thanksgiving and even to the end of January in homes.  I think whoever said people are trying to get their money's worth out of decorating is probably right.  Or maybe trying to stretch the enjoyment longer so the work of decorating is justified.

Traditional when I was a child was our tree went up around the 10th of December and always, always came down on New Years Day.  I think we've forgotten that Thanksgiving is a holiday of giving thanks for family and friends......

Jo: My goal this year is a more serene Christmas that lasts about 3 weeks. This becomes difficult with all of my friends encouraging me to SHOP NOW! Honestly speaking, my favorite part of Christmas has nothing to do with gifts or shopping or decorating. I still love sitting in front of a real Christmas tree, in the dark with the lights on, sipping something hot, and thinking about "things". I really do cherish those few weeks when the tree is up.

Alisa: My best friend has her tree up every year until about the middle of February. By contrast, I can't wait to rip mine down a few days after Christmas. Although as a child, we always left the tree up until New Year's, I find myself so sick of Christmas that I can't wait to get beyond it. Please don't call me a scrooge...I do love it while it lasts, it just lasts too long for me.

I'm patiently waiting for Thanksgiving which is only around the corner. I know that other houses on the neighborhood will be rushing to get rid of their Halloween decorations so that they can put up their plastic snowman or Santa Claus and Rein Deer.

All the while I'll have my mind on Thanksgiving and all the great food and faces I haven't seen all year. It's a nice calm break from everything busy.

In case I don't talk to you on the Rain before then, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Thanksgiving is my favorite time of the year for the very reasons you mentioned!  No presents, no high expectations - just being with family and enjoying good food!  We are flying out to see family for this holiday, but will be laying low in Maui during christmas.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I love this blog post Janet.  You'll be happy to know that I took down my Halloween Decorations yesterday and my daughter and I put up Thanksgiving Decorations.  Pumpkins, Indian Corn and red leaves.  I need to go by some Pilgrim People to make it complete.  It's my stand on Thanksgiving!

(I must say that there is a really kewl metal deer Christmas decoration on sale in Longs - I want it.  33% off!!  Ahhhh, I digress!)

Erica: If I would have known Christmas candy was given to trick or treaters, this blog would have had a much better headline! That is hysterical.

Lisa: Walking on the beach on Christmas morning in Maui. I am so jealous.

Kate: I only have "harvest" decorations and they are up until the end of November. They are the most beautiful decorations in the world...red leaves and orange pumpkins, etc. I was donating some things to the local thrift store and the manager told me they sold $7000 worth of Christmas stuff last Saturday. So your little reindeer thing is just a normal "I wanna buy" syndrome that infects all of us at Christmas.

The funny thing is, who needs anymore Christmas stuff? But it is so much fun to buy it!
