So I started remodeling a rental home last month - and with remodeling comes trips to the local Tucson landfills. I usually take my trailer-load way out west to a landfill that takes anything and everything. But today, because I just had construction material and yard stuff I went to the Speedway landfill which is closer to my home.
The Speedway landfill is divided into two sections - green stuff on one side - construction on the other. As I waited on the construction side, I noticed something - there was a lot of construction materials being dumped off and a lot had already been pushed aside for the morning.
Talking to the yard guy about it he said, "If people think no one is building or spending money on remodeling - they need to come here for a day. The construction debris are the biggest drops."
There is a lot to be said for statistics and numbers. But sometimes, getting out and seeing it for yourself changes a perception you might have. Before today, I didn't think there was much building going on in town - and seriously thought I was one of the few who spent money on remodeling.
Folks writing about Tucson new construction/remodeling market might want to take a trip to the local dump before writing their next article - because I do believe there is more building than what's being counted and sometimes seeing it changes your opinion!
