Sunday Devotions XIV - The world is not black and white. Sometimes it's gray.

I don't think anyone would say I was a traditional pastor when I was pastoring full-time.  Having an entrepreneurial mindset, I was always "forward looking" and seeking God's guidance for my church's future.  I've said many times that the church is 10 years behind what God is doing.  My sons say 40 years behind. By the time the leadership of the local church concludes that something is a good idea, God has moved on because society and the world has changed. Nonetheless, the church launches into ineffective activities that are no longer profitable for the Kingdom of God, and lackluster results frustrate believers and cause them to harden to change.

When I brought Christian Rock concerts to my community in the late 80s I received so many nasty letters from local pastors that we started www.mikecooperministries.comwhat we called "The Nasty Letter File."  My grammar girl wife loved to take her red pen and correct the grammar and spelling in the letters.  She always wanted to correct them and send them back, but I wouldn't let her.  Some of those letters were pretty vile and all were terribly nasty.  I learned early in life that if you're going to be a trendsetter - you're going to be out front.  If you're out front - you'll get shot first.  No problem.  I've got a kevlar hide.

When I led a men's bible study at the church I did something that might sound bizarre, but it proved a great point about how the church reaches out to the lost world.  The guys were all gathered in my office and we were ready to start our study.

I went to my file cabinet and pulled out a file.  The file was full of pictures of a very beautiful, very sexy and very naked woman who was in a James Bond movie.  The guys were a little surprised that I was passing out soft porn pictures for them to gaze upon, but I had a point.  I wanted them to take a really good look, and they did.

When they had viewed the portfolio of pictures, I asked, "Would she be welcome in our church?"  Of course, all of the guys smiled and said, "Absolutely!"  "Really?"  "YOU BET!"  Then I dropped a bomb on them.  I said, "She's a man."

The beautiful and sexy woman in the pictures was a man with a sex change.  The point of my little exercise was to demonstrate to the men that the world the church functions in is not necessarily black and white.  The study went on with a series of questions.

  • Would she be welcome in God's kingdom?
  • Did Christ die for her/him?
  • Would she be welcome in our church?
  • If so, if she wanted to marry, would she marry a man or a woman?
  • If she married a woman, would that create confusion?
  • If she married a man, would that be considered a homosexual marriage?
  • Would she be allowed to work in the nursery?
  • Would we allow her to sing with the praise team?
  • Would she be allowed to teach Sunday school, bible study, any study?

Well, I told you I wasn't a traditional pastor.  My whole goal was to get the men to think.  We don't live in a 50s world.  We live in a very complicated world with a lot of diverse needs and circumstances.  In this complicated world, one thing remains constant, every man, woman, boy and girl needs to know the life saving grace of Christ.

When I was working in prisons, the prisoners used to beg me to start a churchwww.mikecooperministries.com where they would be welcome.  Ironically, I had numerous former inmates in my church.  We didn't make a big deal out of it.  I didn't see their past as a condition to keep them out of the Kingdom of God or the local church.  The church went on to lead large numbers of people to Christ in this country and around the world, and along the way, many learned that the world is no longer black and white.  Sometimes, it's gray.

Oh, and by the way, those rock concerts went on for over a decade and led hundreds of teens and adults to Christ.  Ironically, at least half of the churches that sent nasty notes to me ultimately sponsored their own Christian concerts.  No apologies were ever received in our office, but I didn't expect any either.

Of course they did start their own rock concerts.  That is the way.  You paved the way to help them see.

It's always surprising how people that are supposed to bring people together and to spread the word can be so close-minded.  What is ahead of it's time today is tomorrow's norm.

Untraditional indeed, which is why people were most likely drawn to you, respected you and were comfortable being themselves around you. Great story Mike.............puts me in mind of myself in many ways.

Phil, I think you're right.  I believe the average church would be surprised at what He would do if He were here today.

There must have been a dozen that went in that direction within a year.  It was funny to watch.

Doug, it breaks my heart to be honest.

Thanks, Roger.  I think people appreciate the fact that I was very real.  I didn't try to impose church polity on people.  I just encouraged them to live according to God's Word and be led by the Holy Spirit.  That took a little effort, but their lives were much more fulfilling and exciting.  Thanks for dropping by!!

Mike, now there is something I didn't know about you! Very interesting, to say the least. Getting people to think outside the old fashioned traditional way is often very difficult. Getting them to understand acceptance of others, of things they are afraid of, things they don't understand is also very difficult. Way to go for being so progressive!

As a side note, I am usually very quiet about what I believe, what I know to be true. I have learned that I can become a stumbling block for some, made a target of by others, some have even made it their mission to bring me to the truth as they know it. Diversity in our beliefs is a difficult thing for many to handle.

That is definitely a challenge sometimes, Andrea.  I'll have to admit that as I've gotten older, I don't have the same level of concern about what others think.  There was a time I restricted my self on just about everything because I didn't want offend someone.  What I discovered over time is that those who are so easily offended would be offended no matter what.  So, I dedicated myself to live my Christian faith out as I see it in Scripture, and I'm even though I'm not going to go out of my way to offend others, I'm not going to be a prisoner to their thin skin. Happy Sunday!!

Excellent post, my friend.  If you haven't checked out Andrew Wommack (www.awmi.net) I would highly advise you do so.  He tells a cute story of a biker couple who came to his little church and found the Lord.  She came every week in a bikini top and swore like a trucker.  The women hated her, the men loved her.

Andrew tried to convince people that God would refine her, but people were appalled at her attire and thought she was just flaunting herself.  So she showed up at a Ladie's Bible Study one morning and during prayer, asked God to provide her with a dress because she couldn't afford to buy one, and she wanted to look like the other ladies.  Within two hours there were 18 dresses on her doorstep :))))  I love that God looks at the heart.

Great story, Mimi.  I did look at the site.  Looks like great things are happening there.  One time,  I asked an inmate to give a testimony about his life.  He jumped right up and shared his life-changing experience peppered with more profanity than I had ever heard at a drunken party.  Did we stop him?  Absolutely not.  Were we amused?  Very.  Were we offended?  Not even a little.  Babies act like babies.

Mike, I am amazed how judgmental we Christian folk can be. The unfortunate reality is too many babes who have moved into early adolescence stay there. We know junior high kids see the world as very black and white. When you move towards young adulthood, you begin to see the grays more clearly. I think it is probably indicative of too many Christians and where they are in their faith walk. Learning to affirm folks where they are at, to love them and simply discuss life with them allows God to do amazing things.

Mike,

Fabulous post.  I still miss my old young mother's bible studies, it was one of my best group activities as a young mother.  Natural attrition changed that, but the things I learned and the experiences we shared still put a smile on my face as I think about this or when I see one of the other ladies to this day.

Learning to see a little gray is a good thing, along with acceptance that we still have a lot to learn.  Cutting edge is never easy.

All the best, Michelle

Mike - You sound like my type of pastor and I'm not a religious guy per se.  By the way, love the disclosure:)

Thanks, Jason.  I was a challenge for the local religious establishment.  8-)  That disclosure came about because of my lovely grammar girl wife who would say, "Oh, by the way, you . . . . on your blog" after it had been online all day.  So, I thought, "Shoot, I know I'm a goober.  Now the world knows I'm a goober.  I might as well disclose it up front."  Have a great Sunday!!

I disappear for a couple of days and look how many of your posts I missed. You always have a terrific lesson for the day. I've never seen the world as black and white. However, I still would have been really angry about not receiving an apology from those other churches who wrote me nasty letters after they finally had a change of heart and got with the program.

Ah, pride is a terrible master, and it seldom empowers it's servants to do the right thing.  I would have been more surprised to have one send an apology.
