Reflection on the Olden Days - Silent Saturday

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with MoonDancer Realty, Dillsboro,NC NC# 218097

Some people think that “the olden days” were much simpler. I don’t know about that. Technology might have been different but design was anything but simple.

When I look at the design of vintage clothing, jewelry, vehicles and architecture…there seems to be a lot going on. Maybe we’ve simplified design but complicated our distractions? /:) raised eyebrows

Pros and cons to everything it seems.  I can walk down the dog food, cereal and all other aisles in a super market and be overwhelmed with choices!  Hendersonville has numerous antique car shows and I enjoy seeing them "tooling" around the roads.  It shows that when things are well cared for they have a chance at a long life.  Homes included!

Hi Sue, good perspective.  Can I add to your list by saying if we take care of ourselves and others...there's a good chance for a long life for us too!

Good morning Mona. I think there is beauty in everything if you have the attitude and interest in seeing it. I love all things old: simpler, maybe not always but special nonetheless because it reminds me of a time gone by. I'm off to antique in the 40's, pretty cold but sunny. Enjoy your day. Did the closing happen yesterday?

I love it and your analogy of how the more we get more tech savvy and things get more and more complicated...

Mona, I think that you're on to something.  We don't put the effort into the design like they used to, but they do have much more complexity to things!

Hi Mona, I would think simpler refers to a slower pace of life, nowadays it's all about instant gratification. Thankfully, there are still many areas where clocks seem to tick a little slower and one can just get lost in the surroundings - IF we so choose.

Thanks Dorie, I hope your Saturday is nice as well.

Sheila, I think you got the weather we had a couple of days ago.  Mid 70s here and off to a festival shortly.

Janis, I wonder if they get more complicated more so if we let them.  ohmmmmm

Tony and Darcy, it might be that ignorance used to be bliss.  Now we just know more about so many things.

Andrea, there was a great line in Postcards from the Edge...Meryl Streep's character thought instant gratification took too long.  I think for the most part, clocks tick slower here.

Mona~ I love the detail of vintage cars.  We saw a few while we were out and about today.

Donna, they are so dramatic in design and everything is so extreme in style.  Opposite of what we see today.

Not so many choices. I think people remember the olden days fondly because life seemed simpler. You knew what was expected of you and you did it.

Mona, love the analogy - you are a true wordsmith! Had a chuckle over the comments - I think Lenn was in a literal frame of mind and missed the point. I completely agree with you about the design elements - we have simplified so much in North American modern design, but certainly have complicated our lives a whole lot with technology. We're trying to do our bit to take back our lives, tho, we do have a 'no electronics' evening once a week - and once a month we get together with friends for a simple games night (our motto is: "we're simple and so are the games"!)  :-)

Loved the car photo, too - that is one detailed piece of car architecture!

Jill, we do have an extraordinary number of choices for everything...groceries, clothing, music, appliances...those items alone are very distracting.

Karen, Leslie and I often mention that it would be very cool to be your neighbor.  We seem to have so much in common.  Yes, I agree...Lenn was taking it too seriously  ;-D

Each generation brings new different technology and ideas.  I am not sure thing have been "simple" since Adam and Eve got created.

Tammy, I think that was my point...the "olden" days were just different, not necessarily better.  Hope you are well.

Hi Mona, There is somethiing aesthetic about some of the vintage things especially cars. They were purchased, restored and lovingly tuned not for distance but for the sheer design beauty.

I own a 1963 Sedan Delivery simply because of its design as well as a black 1950 Ford pickup.

Design is definitely in my blood.  And, I don't own a cell phone.  I listen to baseball games on the radio further cutting down on distraction.

This was an excellent post for ruminating on on a Sunday morning.  Thank you, Mona.

Mona - we love classic cars; have owned a few and we're looking for another one but there is nothing simple about them. I love the look of them but I love the convenience of new :)

William,  it is hard to imagine 50 years from now someone getting teary eyed over a Kia Optima, isn't it?

Ron, sounds like there is nothing wrong with your sense of imagination...you don't need the 142" screen to know what's going on in the game. Enjoy your Sunday.

Toni, that sums it up just about right and I'll bet there's nothing simple about them but you can still find folks who can get under the hood and figure it out!  Maybe not be able to get the parts so easily though ;-D
