When my brother was with me a few years ago he would beg me to allow him to put them out for me. A Korean war veteran and disabled with COPD and bad legs, he would hobble up our long driveway and along the front fence and proudly attach the flags to fly in the breeze. Though it was painful for him to walk and breathe he was always so proud when finished. It made his day when walking ever so slowly along the fence line attaching the flags someone passing by would beep their horn and wave. My brother would smile from ear to ear and proudly wave back.
My brother is gone now, his age and illness taking there toll but each Memorial Day I think of him. I think of how proud he was to take those painful steps and put each flag in its special spot to honor those of which he was one of.
Happy Memorial Day My Brother. These flags are flying for you
