DO YOU MIND? I'm Kind of on Vacation right now!

Reblogger Bob Miller
Real Estate Sales Representative with Keller Williams Cornerstone Realty

Malik Crichlow writes a grea post on setting time away for yourself - vacation.  And she does a great job outlining how not to let business interfere with the time off we all so need.  But almost hidden in the intro to her post is the secret that will allow those vacations and allow one to enjoy: " "eat what you catch" kind of business. If we don't prospect, lead generate"

Lead generate consistantly and you will always have enough business to allow vacations!

BEFORE YOU START READING, I AM WONDERING WHY THIS POST HAS 39 COMMENTS AND IS NOT FEATURED? GUESS ITS NOT IN THE CARDS...LOL...OK NOW TO REGULAR SCHEDULED BLOG POST

As Real Estate professionals we are in a "eat what you catch" kind of business. If we don't prospect, lead generate and mingle with people we will not generate any business which means no money, deniro, yen, pesos (what ever your currency may be, I'm sure you get my drift)

But as human beings we also have to set aside time to just be free of the contracts, attorneys, home inspections, appraisals, negotiations, arguing, showings, open houses, phone calls, emails etc...and a vacation is the perfect place to do all of that.

Now if you are running your Real Estate career like I am then you are planning your vacations in advance sometime in December/January so that you can properly prepare for it. But no matter if you plan it ahead of time or you finally sold enough to afford a vacation; then go for it!!! but here's the problem with that most of us live on the cell phone/email/text and its pretty difficult to leave it at home or in the hotel room while you enjoy fun in the sun. But when that phone starts ringing, buzzing or vibrating; here's what's going through your mind; "what if it's an emergency back home" what if it's an agent with an offer" "wonder if it's the appraiser with that report" "why is the Attorney calling me so much, is the deal dead?" "That could be a new lead". The bottom line is your on vacation, so you better enjoy it!

Relax....take a deep breath. I made the mistake of picking up my phone while on vacation for business purposes and heard everything from; deadlines that are due, deals that will die and how the world was going to end if I didn't come back and deal with things right away....but here's all I heard on my end as I sip my daiquiri...

All I said was "do you mind I'm kind of on Vacation right now!" and quite frankly I will not be back for another few days and all will have to get handled at that time. My fellow professionals remember you are human before you are an Realtor. So don't allow the entire Summer to pass you by because you think you are ROBO-REALTOR who should not have a life and is only here to SERVE & SELL to buyers and sellers then you will burn yourself out eventually. Let's be honest the last thing you want is your significant other to be giving you this look because you can't put down the "DAMN PHONE" (as they call it) to spend time with your family, then you better take my advice.

Here's some tips to making sure you have both a productive & fun summer:

  • Work hard all year so you can afford to first go on a vacation and be able to enjoy it. That's always the fist step
  • .Plan your vacation in advanced to avoid any issues with any of your deals. If you know you are going away you plan things accordingly and no one will be taken by surprise.
  • Alert everyone you are currently working with about your scheduled vacation. This way everyone is on notice and know NOT to contact you while you are away.
  • If you have an assistant have them be on call in case of emergencies. This way if you get a call from your assistant you know that it might be worth answering.
  • Set up your voice mail and email to display or relay messages to incoming calls and emails so they everyone is constantly being alerted to your absence.
  • If you don't have an assistant; team up with an Agent in your office to work as a buddy that will intercept any potential problems or even leads that may be contacting you while your gone. Look at it this way, you can return the favor when they go away so everyone enjoys their vacations.
  • Even if you are enjoying a stay-cation then do that but have some time for yourself and your family.
  • Last but not least....RELAX & RELEASE your mind! you work so hard and deserve a break. Every deal you have going on will not crumble to pieces because you shot down to Florida for 4 days...so enjoy yourself.
Remember folks you cannot make anyone happy unless you are happy first. So learn to work hard and play hard and feel free to use this saying that I tell everyone who will listen when asked.
