How the size of homes has changed in last 50 years.

It also seems to me that the larger the homes, the more the trend for the family to be isolated and not so close.  We don't have to get along anymore...everyone has their own space.  No need to share.  Is that a good thing?  I don't think so.

I have been licensed since 1992 and have seen changes in the size of homes over the years. When I first started and showed homes ove 30 years old they mostly had 3 bedrooms and one bath and a tiny kitchen  . The homeowners raised 3 or more kids in the homes and had no problems. The closets were really small. People cooked a lot and managed in those tiny kitchens.

Homes built in early 90s had 2.5 baths and bigger closets. These two things made buyers who bought a home  in the 90s want to buy these homes rather than buy an older home. As more women started working outside the home people could afford more expensive homes .

The homes started getting larger and builders built  a living room and a  family room in homes along with two and half baths and walk in closets. We had lots of move- up buyers for these homes.

I do not know at what point we started having McMansions and homes over 3000 sq ft became common.

At some point home owners realized that they rarely use the living room but use the kitchen and family room a lot.

Buyers these days prefer smaller homes and can manage without the living room. They do need a study or home office or sitting room in Main bedroom and  gourmet kitchen and great room.

Real estate is local. The above is local trend in Philadelphia and suburbs.

If you are thinking of remodeling your home and have only one bath, you should if at all possible add an additional bathroom or powder room. It is difficult to sell homes with only one bathroom.

Thanks for sharing.  I have also noticed these changes and wondered about many of the same things.  I am sure this is because when I grew up I thought only the very rich had carpet. ( I grew up in the country)

Hi Patsy,  Me too!  Only rich people had carpet, and only rich kids had their own bed and didn't have to share with their sister.  I was wearing dresses made of chicken feed sacks until I outgrew the sack.  ha

I grew up with my parents and two brothers and had only one bathroom but did not feel the need for an extra bath.

Monica, I agree . If there is less space we spend more tim with each other . These days they have a TV in every room .
