If you are buying a home in Red Hook NY one question is where will you work?
I consider Red Hook more of a bedroom community. Most of the businesses in town are small businesses. From what I can see, the largest employers in Town are the Red Hook Central School District, Bard College and Devereux.
Other major employers in nearby Rhinebeck are the Northern Dutchess Hospital along with several healthcare groups and the Rhinebeck School District.
What type of work will you be looking for?
Depending on your field, you might have to consider commuting. Many commute about 30-40 minutes to Poughkeepsie, the County seat, where the County offices are located along with Marist and Vassar colleges, IBM, Central Hudson, St. Francis and Vassar Brothers hospitals , Rhinebeck Bank headquarters and other industries.
Others commute to other towns for work within the County and still others undertake longer commutes to other Counties such as Westchester. Long commuting is something I was very familiar with for many years.
Then, Albany, the Capital of New York, is another commuting destination since it is less than an hour from Red Hook. There you can find government jobs, health-care jobs, tech jobs and much more.
Still others will undertake an even longer commute to New York City where more of a variety of better paying jobs can be found. This commute is usually done by Amtrak from the station in Rhinecliff or from the Metro-North Station in Poughkeepsie.
My observation is that many who live in Red Hook are also self employed, or artists and even those who commute to the city might only do so half the week and work home the rest of the time.
