Unmasked

Fortune does not change men, it unmasks them. - Suzanne Necker

So, what's behind your mask? Why are you in this business?

I have had to ask myself that question recently. Without going into detail, I have had to re-evaluate my business, including why I do what I do. And some thoughts have had to change....

I have always seen what I do as a way to help others. Yet, in being honest with myself, my number one goal was money. As much as I could make. That, and pride.

I never put money above the best interests of my clients. There have been times in which I could have easily made a lot more money on a deal if I have worried more about me and my pocket than the client's long term goals. But I have always tried to make sure their goals were the guiding force behind the programs I suggested.

However, when things were going well, and money was flowing, pride became blinding. I began to think that I was the s**t. I was hiring people and had the biggest numbers at my company. My ego began to swell a bit as well. Now I am not the biggest ego guy, so many people may not have noticed... but I did.

Things have slowed for all of us. We all are feeling the effects, even those of us in a good market like Charlotte. And it is in that slow down that I have re-evaluated my business.

So why am I in this business? Because when it all comes down to it, I believe this is where God created me to be. I care about my clients and see them as more than a dollar sign. While I don't know everything, I "get" this business. I "get" why I am needed. And I try with all my might to "get" my clients and their needs.

I am in this business to serve others. I am in this business to help others achieve their dreams and goals, both with clients and associates. I feel that in that n and attitude is where God will bless what I do, and all that I can give to others will come back to me as well. The more I am blessed with allows me to give more to others.

What if we all adopted this mindset? I am not comparing myself to anyone, nor am I saying anyone else's ways are wrong. I am not here to criticize. But if we all poured ourselves in to helping others, none of us would starve, none would be homeless, and none would be naked.

Anyway, that is why I am a mortgage professional.

Why are you in this business?
