The Mark of Spark- Wire markings Chelan and Quincy Home Inspections

Wire shmire, yeah… yeah… yeah. It all can carry the juice (electricity) right?

Well it can but there are many different types of wires and they are marked to designate what and where the wires can be used.

Here we have some wires that are being sent to a detached building (like the conduit and conduit termination, that’s another issue ; ).

Wire feed to detached building Wenatchee Home Inspection

Most homeowners choose to run the electrical feed underground to detached buildings. The two most popular methods are direct burial cable or PVC (plastic) conduit. Direct burial cable is designated as UF (Underground Feeder) or for larger sizes, USE (Underground Service Entrance).

I think it is much better if you run the electrical cable in a conduit. The conduit not only protects the cable from damage from rocks and stones or from trees on top of the cable's route. A conduit (if properly sized) also provides you with the convenient ability to upgrade the service to the outbuilding, should you require additional power in the future.

NM-B used underground Quincy Home Inspection

But what we have here is NM-B wire. NM-B cable is the most common form of indoor residential electrical wiring. The “NM” stands for non-metallic. This wire cannot be used in an underground application or in a wet/damp location.

Wires have many different marks such as THHN or THWN – These letters represent the most common types of individual wires used in residential applications.

The letters represent the following NEC requirements:
T: Thermoplastic insulation
H: High temperature (usually 75°C when dry or damp)
HH: Higher temperature (usually 90°C when dry or damp)
W: Moisture resistant (usually 60°C when wet)
N: Nylon jacket

Other marks you may see:
R: Thermoset insulation (rubber or synthetic rubber)
X: Cross-linked synthetic polymer insulation

So what we have here is an improper feed to the detached building. We have wires that are not properly protected and designated for a wet location. This can lead to degradation of the wires and potential physical damage. It’s time for old Sparky to make a house call.

Underground wires are great until someone starts to dig without them being marked first.

James, I have a special place for firefighters also. Thank you for stopping by.

Richard, That is very true. I have hit one that was not properly buried. Nice when the shovel sparks.

Very cool that you could see that Don!  Around here I don't think I have ever seen a feed INTO the house!

My house once had electricity die on one of my phases.  Turns out my neighbor's yard chewed a hole into the feed.  The electric company hooked up a cool battery which gave us juice for 36 hours.  Then they found the break in the yard and dug a 6'x6'x8'Deep hole!  My neighbor came home to see the huge grave.  I told him his yard bit into my electrical. Yep, wrong kind of feed!  Did they change it?  No, just reconnected the cable, surrounded it with this big connector box encased in vaseline and reburied it!  That was 10 years ago.  So far so good.

Electricity can be dangerous especially for HGTVer's. IMO opinion you should always have reputable contractor when messin' with power.

Nice post Don! I would like to point out that even with conduit the installation is very important. If the conduit connections are not sealed properly, the conduit can fill with water and your sweet, protected wires will be sitting in water. The joints should be threaded and sealed, or if plastic conduit is used, glued securely.

Got to have a healthy respect for electricity! Hire a qualified electrician!!

Donald, a good example where the job should be done by an electrician. Too many variables to get it wrong for the DIY'er.

I'm not sure in our area if anyone would be allowed to run a feeder that is not  suited for its purpose. . but you never know. .

Nice informative blog.  I've just learned quite a bit about wires.  I do enjoy the underground wires. I agree with Richard, don't dig before checking!!!!

Showed a home the other day that had the exposed wire in conduit all the way to 6" from the breaker box and 6" from the plugs and switches. All that effort to still have it wrong.

Hey all Happy New Year

Jay, Thanks. Hope you have a great New year.

Joel, By not having a proper understanding you can create some dangerous situations.

Fred, true. though I think most conduits end up with some water in them.

Michael , Very true.

'Black means it's exterior rated", NOT!. I found a few hunderd feet of wood fencing that was 'electrified' with NM-B wire just like that. No GFCI's either.
