If You Work During Your Vacation...Is it Still a Vacation?

I guess depends on your definition of vacation.

The fact of the matter is, "vacation" doesn't mean what it used to, and the introduction of mobile devices, that are just as good as laptops (but twice as small), as well as Wifi have made it close to impossible to fully disconnect.

I understand though and I have been guilty of it. I don't want to disconnect completely and come back to an overflowing inbox or a voicemails in the triple digits, so I'm never completely away.

Is this bad?

Well, according to a blog post in the Miami Herald, it might actually be a good thing.

The key is to create a schedule that allows to you enjoy your vacation to the max while still keeping up with what's going on at the office.

The post does not suggest that you take your smart phone and check emails during a day at the beach nor does it say to bring your laptop on a midday hike but you should integrate your office into your vacation, not the other way around, if you choose to be connected.

A survey on CareerBuilder, posted with the article, surveyed 6,000 workers and discovered that 12 percent of them say they feel guilty they're not at work when they're on vacation.

I believe it.

Our jobs are the most important thing in our lives (after our families), especially if we're starting out and haven't gotten the hang of everything. But disconnecting, at least once a year, is important to overall productivity and effectiveness. The stress alone will eventually turn you into a nervous wreck and no employer wants that. Not to mention if you're self employed, then you'll really be in the gutter.

One suggestion is to check emails and go online early in the day or late at night and "never try to do anything complex that will pull out of vacation." If balance is the key, then there's a time and place for everything, you just have to look for times during the day where you can be productive without becoming a hotel room shut in.

In our business, I don't think it's good nor productive to disappear completely.

It's just not realistic. You can miss something if you have gone completely off the grid. However, we do need to unwind, so why not take a vacation and make choices that benefit both your business and your time off.  I typically work approximately 1 hour per day while on vacation.

It's probably not going to be easy but it'll keep you relaxed, and productive, all in one sitting.

Phil, this is such a timely post with half of our local Board of Realtors at the beach somewshere in the world - and completely wired!  I can remember in the old days worrying about how much my vacation would actually "cost" in lost business.

Patricia, thanks for stopping by! The truth is vacation does cost business, especially if you're only one person. When people couldn't as easily communicate, they were more patient and waited for you to get back. Now, and because of instant gratification, vacation has become a balancing act.

It depends on how long your vacation is, doesn't it, a few days or a few weeks? I just returned from 3 weeks in Hawaii without checking any of my emails. I won't do that again, but I decided to try the pure vacation route and while the vacation was great, the return to work was more than I anticipated.

Kimo, very true. The longer the vacation the more advisable it is to regularly keep in touch. Having said that, every few years, a no outside contact vacation is necessary, despite the piles of work that we leave behind.

Vacation....vacation.....hmmmmm, I think I've heard that wored SOMEWHERE!

Seriously, I've been blessed to have jobs that I enjoy, so, over on 10+ year period, I took NO days off - PERIOD! In this job, I feel the same way. Why take time off from what I enjoy!?!

Travis, you are very lucky indeed. Not to say I don't love my job but a few days off is always welcome. We can't wait till retirement to enjoy everything!

Phil,

This is such a GREAT post! There are so many things I love about what you have written and mostly its the truth. I don't think its fair to say, don't do this or don't do that - it just makes people want to do it! It's like being in a continuing ed class, as soon as the instructor says, shut off your phones, you start thinking about what you're missing and you don't relax or concentrate on what's going on in class. I like how you balanced the two - work/vacation. Both are important and you can't fully function effectively when you have something else that's equally important on your mind. I think it's worse when you are with someone and they don't give you the time of day and they are on their phones - it's as if you don't exist, or your not important. Just try to ignore the boss, a client, a family member and watch what happens then.

Congratulations on an excellent feature!

Patricia, thank you! That's why I try to get in work as early as possible, before the day starts, so that no one's vacation is interrupted and I don't feel like I'm giving too much to one or to the other. There's a time and place for both, I just have to plan and fit them in when it's approciate.

You know I bring the smart phone and the lap top to handle essential things.  It is amazing how much I can put off and how little I have to actually do.  Mainly just communicate with people so they know you are working for them.

For some reason, it always seems like we are the busiest right before we head off for vacation, yes?  Unplugging for 2 solid weeks would make me uncomfortable ... and could be downright disastrous.  So, I appreciate having modern technology where I can be in touch as needed.  Plus, keeping a casual eye on what is happening would allow me to relax and enjoy my vacation ... as others have commented above.

Gene, ain't it the truth. Sometimes what seems impossible is the most easily solvable. Being on vacation doesn't mean you stop working, just that working will come second for the next few days.

Carie, the added pressure of not knowing what was going on would be too much sometimes. Feeling like you are out of touch completely can make anyone's palms sweat, unless that is what you were looking for.

Hi Phil,   for me, it depends on the vacation.   Sometimes working remotely is easy and I'll do what's needed for an hour or so in the morning or evening.   But I like to go "off the grid" at least once a year.   I arrange to have a great agent cover for me when I'm on that type of vacation .   To me it's well worth paying (for example by the hour for my right hand admin/coordinator to stay on top of e-mails, or a referral fee to the agent) to spend quality time with loved ones, so I can totally relax and regenerate.

M.C., one a year sounds great. If you find someone that can be a second you, despite the price, I'm sure it is worth every penny.

I have never been able to take a vacation without working a little bit.  When I take a vacation, I send out an e-mail to all my clients, letting them know I will be available for questions only, as I won't be near the office.  I will also have a name and number for them to call when they need a real person.  I am also working on getting a "partner" for such circumstances, one where we will be co-agents with certain clients and listings.

William, it's great that you're as thorough with your clients as you can be on vacation and redirect their concerns to a real person who can help them during an emergency. Best of luck finding a partner and here's to more vacations in the future.
