Winterizing Your Home

By
Services for Real Estate Pros

Tis the season for homeowners to get their homes ready for winter.  It's started in many parts of the country already but some don't know where to start.

Tips for winterizing a home are a good way to keep your readers engaged and continue to show your expertise.  Include tips on things like:

Gutters
Heaters
Furnaces
Windows
Insulation
Air Ducts
Fire Alarms
Chimneys

Include information and service numbers for company's that can help homeowners with these tasks.  A one-stop-shop blog post is priceless and will leave your readers indebted to you.

Try reaching out to your home inspector buddy to see if he/she has any advice on this subject.  Picking up the phone or writing a quick email can get you alot further than doing the research all on your own.

Living in Westchester County, the New York metro area, we are generally in tune with these steps. However, we are having an unusually cold spell and we've already had frozen pipes.  So, we realize how important it is to insulate them because of the zero degree temps!

I have been on the morning TV news shows about this. It is as important as spring cleaning.

Good advice.  We're about to be dumped on with about 10 inches of snow and sub-zero temperatures, I'll bet you most of our clients and investors would really appreciate this info, I think I'll take your advice.

Here in Ohio our winters are typically 40 deg down to about 5 deg or so, but this week it's going to be well below zero for a few days.  In that case, it's a good idea to open the cupboard doors under sinks (if they are on an outside wall) so the faucet pipes don't freeze.  Let the warmth of the house work to your advantage.  Oh and by the way, if they DO freeze, ... DO NOT use a torch to thaw ... a hair dryer will often do the trick and it's much safter too!

How appropriate a topic to share with anyone in Oklahoma this time of year. The 'Polar Vortex' is making this a great time to urge clients to take action now!

It has been a subject in the past and for many it is a bit too late to do some things to "get ready" but there are still some tips that help even during the frozen days.

Great tips and very appropriate during this unusual cold spell for some areas not used to these low temperatures.  I have been busy checking homes.  Last week, a client who has a heat pump had his temp set at 44 deg cool and it was like an ice-box.  I change it to 65 heat before the snow came.  He thought that was too high and asked me to put it at 44 heat!  I put it down a few degrees and advised him that he needed to make another judgement and fortunately he agreed with me after listening to the news! A few more dollars for elecctricity is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Thanks for posting those blog ideas. I haven't thought about asking the home inspector for maintenance tips, but I realize it's a great idea. Home inspectors are quite knowledgeable in that area.

It's too late to get started here... snow and freezing temperatures have arrived. In fact, if I don't put on my coat and boots and shovel a bit, the snow falling off the roof is going to be on my sliding door... ugh.

It must have been in the high 40's this morning, but now I am in shirt sleeves.  Not sure how much more of this cold I can take.  We may even dip back into the mid 30's sometime this month.  Yes we have winterized by closing the doors and putting on warm Jammies at home and coats out side.

As a fourth generation Floridian, I know Florida

@ Cheryl Dukes...yes the weather this season has been odd. I am a fourth generation Floridian so I have never lived in the snow. I do remember when it snowed in Okeechobee in 1973. I was ten and it was so exciting for my sister and I. For years we kept snowballs (ice) in the freezer.

Very good ideas for winterizing your home.
