A friend of mine, a Russian immigrant, Ph.D., MD, a former surgeon from St. Petersburg, passed the National Exam in US, but did not go through internship. This loophole soon was closed, but he was grandfathered and while could not treat live patients, became an ace in Pathology department. He is a virtuoso with the scalpel.
He worked at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York. They had fellows coming from all over the world, and my friend would get “fresh” tumors and his work was bringing them to the group and initiate discussions.
Here is the story he told me.
He just got a large tumor and by the look and size, he immediately knew that it was not cancerous, and this is what he proudly told the fellows around him. The Head of Pathology Department was passing by, so my friend turned to him and asked
- Professor, what can you tell fellows about this tumor?
The Head of the Department looked at the tumor, confirmed that it was not cancerous, but then added that the patient was a female of certain age. That she was very socially active. That she was financially well established, and that she was very sexually active.
My friend was speechless, he went and took the file and yes, she was a female of certain age, and she had an envious salary…
He went back to the Head of Pathology Department and begged for the answer.
No miracle. These tumors usually happened in females who used specific contraceptive. Because of the size of the tumor Professor thought that the patient should have been taking it for at least 10 years and professor knew when this contraceptive hit the market. This contraceptive was not covered by any insurance plan (it was before Obama) and it was expensive…
What did everybody see? A yellowish well rounded tumor?
So, what is here about real estate?
It is that customers see what is readily observable. It is the house/condo and the price. Equally or more important are the things they do not see. Professionals have “better” vision and see what is not obvious.
