Finally a Little Moisture...Not Enough but Better Than Nothing!!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Mike McCann - Broker, Mach1 Realty Farm & Commercial Land Broker-Auctioneer Serving Nebraska

Not sure if you have noticed or even cared about the the lack of moisture in certain parts of the country.  But we all should be.

Why you may wonder? Because a lot of these dry locales are where our food comes from!

Parts of the Midwest are bone dry as is California and other areas. Light Snow in Central Nebraska

We are having our first substantial snow in Central Nebraska since November of 2013.

Although it is still snowing, the 3 or 4 inches we did get does not have a ton of moisture in it.

"This Will Be A Dry Snow" my weatherman friend said...

For the most part he was right! And yet my back still feels it from the scooping!!

We need the snow to help with the subsoil moisture which is the starter for our crops in the spring...kind of like that plant you buy and when you plant it one of the first things you do is water it.

Same with the seeds in the ground or the Winter Wheat that is trying to stay alive in its dormant stage right now. The wheat is asleep right now and doesn't know that it hasn't gotten a drink (snow) or that it does not have a blanket on (snow) right now.

When it awakes in a month or two it may have a lot of freeze or drought damage.

Usually by now we have had 3 or 4 snows and a blizzard or 2.

We will need 10 or 15 times the amount of this current snow to make a significant difference so this truly is 'Not Enough but Better Than Nothing'!!

Guess it is time to get the 4 wheel drive out and go play....

Until Next Time...

Hi Mike...thanks for sharing.  Low moisture is always a problem.  Hope you get your quota this year, even if it means more 4 wheel drive days!  Have a good one.

Rebecca,  Thanks for stopping by.

We just had our first major push of snow this year. We are now in the bitter cold with it being -15 this morning.

First time it has been that cold in about 30 years I think.

By the way...I love your background photo on your AR Home page.
