Lights, Cameras, Energy Code Requirements for lighting! Kittitas County Home Inspection

2012 Washington State Energy Code (WSEC) now requires that the 75% of your lighting be what is defined as high-efficacy lamps. This is for both interior and exterior lighting. There is no separate requirements for exterior lighting.

                                                  ( Incandescent, CFL, LED )

What are high-efficacy lamps?

HIGH-EFFICACY LAMPS. Compact fluorescent lamps, T-8 or smaller diameter linear

fluorescent lamps, or lamps with a minimum efficacy of:

1. 60 lumens per watt for lamps over 40 watts;

2. 50 lumens per watt for lamps over 15 watts to 40 watts; and

3. 40 lumens per watt for lamps 15 watts or less.

Now when it comes to this requirement your two main choices are CFL and LED.

My thought on this is LED is the way to go. The are at full brightness at the flip of the switch and run cooler than the CFL’s. I have been slowly replacing my lighting with the LED’s and so far I very happy with the light they produce.

Also it has been my experience that the CFL’s just do not last as long as described by the manufacturers. One cause of this maybe that frequent cycling may degrade the CFL’s. Also Consumer Reports has found that turning CFLs on and off in less than 15 minutes period was leading to degradation of their life cycle. The life expectancy of CFL is about 6000 to 10,000 hrs per manufacturers.

LED lighting has a life expectancy of 20,000 to 50,000 hours and some high quality LED’s will function for well over 100,000 hours. At 8 hours per day this would be approximately 17 years those in the 50,000 hour range.

I expect the cost of LED’s will continue to drop as they become more common. Also some municipalities may have rebates for installing LED’s.

Don, I would only add that this % is an increase from the 50% requirement of the 2009 WA Energy Code.

I never saw too much if any paying attention to the 09 but builders seem to be on board with the 2012

I absolutely love my LED's---it is SOOO about time.

So, since "they" (my favorite gubment rip) "require" it, to "they" go around, house to house, with clip boards, enforcing it?  What happens if someone is at, oh, 74%, according to the clip board.  Are they jail bait until they get on board with the program?  What's the fine?  How many strikes before you're out?

If you haven't seen Peabody and Sherman yet, it is a riot.  Sounds like Miss Grunion would fit right into this program!  Clip board and all.  (yes, I love cartoon movies)

Sorry, this kind of crap really gets to me.

When I see words like "efficacy," I put my comb to my front lip and begin with the sarcasm.  You know what what means, right?

Most sarcasm involves the idiocy Americans continually let themselves get into.

I am a Son of the American Revolution, so I can't help it.  Direct from this guy.  My grandmother's middle name was Bowie.  He was a dude.

Charlie, Yeah we are up from our 2009 requirement. I love my LED so far also.

Jay, These are always tough questions. No different then demanding higher SEER HVAC, more insulation and better fuel efficiency on vehicles.

I was talking with the energy guys and they had an interesting perspective that we should at least debate.

If we can create enough energy efficiency that we can reduce the total demand per home then we do not have to build additional power plants to meet current and near future demands. I know it is a give and take.

I think this is a bit of low hanging fruit in a sense.

Now funny that you brought up enforcement. Because we know the only time that will happen is at the time of build after that, nadda.

I think we should have different voices heard on these issues.

But so far I do like my new LED's I am trying out. The light frm them is very bright.

Pretty simple to get to that 75% reduction with LED's.  I too am a Son of the American Revolution---actually some 140 years earlier--and I think this is a not so revolutionary issue who's time is WAY over due.

I LOVE LEDs.  I HATE gubment force.  Again, we learn from history that we learn nothing from history.  The American Revolution was NOT that we fought England.  It was that we said kings, and tyrants and gubments DO NOT have rights, individuals do.  And natural, God-given rights to boot!  If individuals do not get that, be they son or daughter or whatever of the revolution, then the Revolution failed.

Refrigerators have gotten 75% more efficient in the last 30 years, maybe less.  And not because some jack boot came around forcing everyone to get a new one.  They got more efficient because of technology and the profit motive.  Nobody was required to replace their fridges.  When I see an old Harvest Gold fridge in the basement or garage I simply tell people they are killing themselves with the unnecessary cost.  It's dumb ass, but sometimes that is what freedom brings.

I can hardly wait to see how you individuals allow your state Poobahs (to whom you assign "rights") to enforce your wondrous state energy plan.  Clipboards, home visits and fines?  You think I'm kidding?

I'm going out today and buying even more incandescent bulbs.  600W if I can find them.  Unnecessary energy costs?  Not really - light bulbs make up a very small percentage of my energy bill.

There, I feel better.

If you see the Peabody movie, let me know if you get the Spartacus joke!

Jay, Glad I could help ;) I probably will see the movie when it comes out later. I remember the cartoon pretty well.

Fred, LOL.

Jay, are you saying your state has not adopted the 2009 or 2012 IRC?  I think once the builder installs bulbs to whatever the requirement, you as an owner are free to replace them with whatever you like.  One would hope that people would choose to police themselves.  But given some people's notion of "freedom" they might just rather be stubborn :)  By the way, refrigerators were requried to become more efficient the same way automobiles were required to become more efficient.

Yes, Virginia has adopted all that.  And yes, I see incandescents in new homes all the time.

And yes, I am stubborn.  And no, I say NOT A WORD when I see incandescents in new construction!  And yes, that's a double negative!
