Who builds a deck without posts?
I need to prepare an estimate to rebuild a second story deck in Roseville tonight. The deck has quite a bit of dry rot and is not worth salvaging any of the wood from the existing deck. I did notice something strange about this deck.
It is my guess that this deck was not done with a building permit issued. There were a few things that made me believe that to be true, but one thing really stood out – It has no posts.
Who builds a second story deck with no posts?
Sure there was wood supports nailed through the 2x2's between the deck and railing but structurally this is very weak. Given the Early stages of rot, the railing has already failed. At a minimum, there should be posts at the corners for strength. This second story deck in Roseville, needed corner posts and I'm recommending 4 additional posts bolts to the perimeter of the structure.
The new design will be more than enough for this Trex deck. The pressure treated lumber will last for decades without rotting and the owners will be pleased with the final product.
I am so glad that the new owners looked for a general contractor in the Roseville area to repair their deck, not just patching the old dangerous work that was there. Before trying to salvage an old second story deck, I would recommend contacting a contractor to look at the project for a professional opinion.
