The Journey to a New Laptop

The Journey to a New Laptop

I’ve known I was going to need a new laptop for some time. The tell-tale signs were all there as things slowed, and various quirks showed up. I’ve gotten to know my laptop quite well over the last 4+ years and the thought of migrating everything, in spite of the increased speed, memory and so on, weighed heavily.

A few months ago I had a major meltdown on my laptop. One morning I could not do anything. My feeble attempts to modify my friend’s behavior, including several reboots which often do the trick, failed.

A quick call to my computer guy (AllSanDiegoComputerRepair), who has never failed me in the past and either comes to the house or does what needs to be done remotely, got help in a few hours.

The diagnosis, which I already knew, was that time was running out and it was time to get a new laptop. Ugh.

My new HP laptop ready for the doctor to beginI've spent a number of days cleaning up My Documents – deleting files, moving lots of videos, thousands of photos, and multiple folders I rarely used onto my external hard drive (yes, I’ve stored files in the cloud in the past but had a devil of a time in a few cases retrieving – time to do that again) in preparation for newness.

I put off buying the new laptop, not for any reason other than procrastination, and today we do the big change-over. Hopefully it will all go smoothly and before long I’ll be up and running. No doubt there will be tweaks along the way, but with technology the way it is I won’t really even have any downtime. The real fun begins in just a couple of hours at 10 am!

I am still working out the bugs on my new lap top. I had dropped and duct taped the old one so many times I started getting nervous. The good news was that it still worked;the bad news was it looked like me. Good luck Jeff!

Having to buy a new laptop is the worst, but sometimes we just have to bite the bullet and do it.

Jeff, Just made the change for the day job.  My old laptop needed 10-15 MINUTES to reach a productive state.  The new one less than 2 minutes.  I'm loving it!  Bill

Jeff- so... what did you get?   Have fun with it.  You know, as much as I love electronics, it takes me a while to get everything set the way I like it.

Jeff I hate switching out laptops.  I just got a new one about a month and a half a go and I am still trying to get it the way I want it.  Hope you get yours running the way you want to quicker than I have.

Jeff -  moving the files is easy.  What is harder is all of the programs and configurations.  But,  once completed you will feel much better.

Jeff, I purchased a new laptop and had to get use to windows 8....At first I hated it.....now I like just a bit of a learing curve.  I use my external drive to store all my photos.

Raymond - good for you! Things are going well here - almost 2800 files copies over to the Dropbox account, and working on about 20GB of files onto the new computer. Thank goodness for someone who knows what they are doing. We finish in the morning

John Meussner Yeah it was scary, but the thought of things totally crashing really hit home

Patty- well it had to be done, and we all have to cope with it at some point. It has gone well so far

Paul - no duct tape here but the laptop is showing its age. Progress is good thus far. Glad I don't have to do it all

Will - time is running out I think

Sybil - no choice when things start to go south. I rely on my laptop too much

Bliz - it's amazing what we put up with but the discovery of how improved the situation can be is a true blessing. And big sigh of relief!

Kathy - it's an HP Pavillion, recommend by my son-in-law who is an IT manager and really knows his stuff. I did NOT want Windows 8 because of the issues. So far so good. We finish the set-up this morning. Had a ton of files to migrate - abut 20GB!

George - well that;s why I have my IT guy do it. He can get it set up far faster, plus he has great recommendations for safer ways to set it up, protect it, streamline some of the functionality, etc.

Grant - true, but he does it far faster, and I can work on other things, like focusing on finalizing my Mom's condo so she can move in Monday!!

Rebecca - several IT folks recommended I stay away from Windows 8 so I did. Lots more memory and processing power. And I keep a complete copy of My Documents on an external drive. Lots of photos there too that do not also reside on my laptop which is easier to access for blog posts!

Argh, I used to go through a PC every YEAR! I do so much marketing and such that I just never seemed to be able to keep one longer. When Windows 8 came out, I went through FOUR laptops and kept returning them because I couldn't stand the program. I ended up with a MAC and, although I am still learning and it has its own issues, I like it MUCH better!

Good luck with the purchase of a new one! Four years sounds like a pretty darn good return on investment!

Jeff~ I'm dealing with the same thing. I'm currently typing my comments and posts on my new laptop, while I'm moving files and  photos to Dropbox on my old one (before it completely dies)!

Shannon - indeed. I am thrilled with 4 years. It IS a pain to migrate but it's happening without major hurdles. Knocking on wood

Donna - yeah I get that. Hope it all goes well for you too!!

Been there, done that, Jeff. I put off buying new equipment like this until there's absolutely no choice. Fortunately I have a great computer guy, but it still takes up valuable time.

It's always a big deal to change computers, and my last change was from a PC to a MAC - a really, really big deal, made easy through the OnetoOne training I purchased. Funny how easily we adapt, and always end up wondering why we waited so long.

Jeff, I have three computers not counting the iPad and one of them is an HP Laptop that I bought at the end of 06.  Still using it occasionally, but it's time for a new one as well.
