The Journey to a New Laptop
I’ve known I was going to need a new laptop for some time. The tell-tale signs were all there as things slowed, and various quirks showed up. I’ve gotten to know my laptop quite well over the last 4+ years and the thought of migrating everything, in spite of the increased speed, memory and so on, weighed heavily.
A few months ago I had a major meltdown on my laptop. One morning I could not do anything. My feeble attempts to modify my friend’s behavior, including several reboots which often do the trick, failed.
A quick call to my computer guy (AllSanDiegoComputerRepair), who has never failed me in the past and either comes to the house or does what needs to be done remotely, got help in a few hours.
The diagnosis, which I already knew, was that time was running out and it was time to get a new laptop. Ugh.
I've spent a number of days cleaning up My Documents – deleting files, moving lots of videos, thousands of photos, and multiple folders I rarely used onto my external hard drive (yes, I’ve stored files in the cloud in the past but had a devil of a time in a few cases retrieving – time to do that again) in preparation for newness.
I put off buying the new laptop, not for any reason other than procrastination, and today we do the big change-over. Hopefully it will all go smoothly and before long I’ll be up and running. No doubt there will be tweaks along the way, but with technology the way it is I won’t really even have any downtime. The real fun begins in just a couple of hours at 10 am!
