Where Have All the Counter Offers Gone?

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

Some agent called me earlier this morning to say Wow, you are the first agent to answer her phone! Well, no shit sherlock, it was 8:15 Sunday morning. What did she expect from agents? Huh? Give us all a break. I am the only agent crazy enough to answer her cellphone. I'm just sitting here reading the Sunday newspaper, petting the cats and waiting for counter offers to come back.

Sometimes we can send out a counter offer to a buyer's agent and the agent vanishes into the woodwork. The least one could do is let me know whether the buyer is rejecting the counter or countering the counter offer. But I imagine they have other things to do. Like call another Sacramento real estate agent at 8:15 on a Sunday morning. You guys just stop that.

I like your style, Elizabeth. If answering the phone on a Sunday morning makes me crazy, I'm okay with that, but I'm not going to stop sitting here petting the dog while I talk!

Answerting the phone is fine and most good agents do it, even on weekends and holidays.  But I like your quote!  Happy Sunday.

I think we need to make it easy for a buyer to respond to our counter; those subliminal messages are powerful ones.

The call usually start with sorry I am calling so early....Most time I answer but I agree especially on a Sunday a little latter would be better.

I received a text from a client at 7:15 this morning (Sunday) and it said, "are you up?" hahahaha.  How could I have honestly said no?

I'm with you.  Sellers should always counter any other they receive.  What's the worst that could happen?  The same thing that would happen if they rejected it...nothing.

I don't understand how when you submit a counter offer, the agent disappears, but it happens to me all the time. Why can't they have the decency to call or send back a rejection. I just don't get it, as I think half the time if we communicated with each other we could make a deal happen.

At 8:15 any morning you'll find me up and running.  If I were to sleep past lets say 6 someone may want to call 911.

I'm seeing it here too...not the early phone calls, but the lack of response with counter offers. Just love it when an offer comes across where the buyer's agent never bothered to read the short sale instructions. And when we counter with the changes they disappear!

Hi Chris: I hear ya -- somebody called me from Pennsylvania, oblivous to the fact it was 8 AM in California, and expected free advice, too, pertaining to her situation in Pennsylvania, where I do not work. Her number is on the Internet. I want to clobber these guys.
