Can Anyone Explain Short URL Click and are they Important?

I see this on the Stats page on Active Rain and do not yet understand them.

I would like to know what they are for.

Short URL Clicks.  The are on the page where we see the traffic that has come to our Blog Page.  All I ever see there is a dash

(-).  It that important?  When I write a Blog, although I am not very good, I like to look then next time that I am on the Active Rain website and see if anyone has found what I wrote to be interesting or informative or laughable..

I know that I learn so much from reading the Post of other ActiveRain Members. Some folks have a natural talent for writing and illustrating there Blogs.  For the record....I do appreciate someone who can write a really good Blog..

Thanks,

Ginger Harper They are a way to track outside of ActiveRain sources that are clicking on our content. The idea is to click the "Short URL %" button at the top of your blog posts, copy the code it creates (it looks similar to this: http://actvra.in/4sLt), and either use that code in the share buttons at the top of your blog post or go directly to your social media sites and use the code as the link back to your ActiveRain content.

Maybe this post will help: What are Short URL Clicks and How Do I Use Them.

Good question. I was going to respond til I saw Anita's answer which is spot on.

I use short URLs in all my Facebook or Twitter posts/updates. I also use them in email marketing when I send links to market reports or other posts to prospects.
