There's a Snake in the Toilet

By
Real Estate Agent with McGraw Realtors

Back when I was still fairly new to the world of Real Estate and the fine art of selling houses in Owasso Oklahoma, I got a call one summer day to go show one of my listings.  I set up the appointment and when the day arrived, headed out a bit early so I could be there when the potential buyers arrived.

This particular Owasso property is in the country, but only minutes from the city.  It sits up on a hill.  You can see the downtown skyline area of Tulsa to our south from the front-door.  It's an amazing view.

Soon the buyers arrived and we started the tour.  This house has a big shop, so I always start there.  Guys love that shop.  Once we got in the house, I noticed it was warm, so I turned on the attic fan not wanting to run the AC for such a short time since the house is vacant.  I started opening a few windows and propping doors open to get good, quick airflow.  The tour was going fine until I went to open a window in one of the bedrooms.  What I didn't see was the Wasp in Oklahomawasp nest that had been built during the last couple of days.  Wasps apparently don't care for windows to be opening around their nests as this stirred them up pretty good and one of them nailed me right on my right temple.  BAM!  Needless to say, we went running and slammed the door shut.  So there we are in the hall kind of scared and kind of laughing all at the same time.  The guy checked my temple, didn't see any stinger and since it didn't hurt much we continued the tour after a few minutes of rehashing the attack.

So it's off to the hall-bathroom.

The snake in the ToiletEver walk into a room and just immediately know that something wasn't right there?  That's what I felt the instant I entered the bathroom.  Looking over the vanity I saw something black in the toilet.  And then I saw the beady eyes and forked tongue.  Yep, there was a snake IN THE TOILET!  I couldn't believe it!  So out of the bathroom I come as fast as possible.  I suppose I wasn't thinking clearly, but I told them we couldn't go in there that there was a snake in the toilet.  Maybe I just should have said, "You can't see that room right now," but I was too rattled.  So the wife freaks out, the dad kind of scratches his head and their teenage son goes, "Cool!"  Then the kid goes into the bathroom to have a look for himself!

After we got the mom calmed down (and ourselves as well), we quickly looked at the rest of the house.  I figured this was a lost cause, but alas, I was wrong!  The dad actually asked if I had a plat of the property, which I did - back at the office.  So we went to the office, looked it over and much to my surprise, they were still somewhat interested in the property.

Man is this a strange business or what???

After they left, I called the owner and told him that we had a problem that HE had to take care of.  He said he would go right over to get the snake out of the toilet and handle the wasps.  I asked him how in the world he thought he was going to get the snake out of the toilet since all you could really get close to was the biting end.  His first thought was a 12 gauge and a new toilet.  What he actually ended up doing was devising a lasso of some sort and removing the snake.  It turned out to be a 6 foot long bEpipen for Bob Haywoodull snake.  He said the wasps had calmed down enough when he got there so that he could get the window shut without getting stung.  I kind of figure the wasps were probably at the wasp hang out laughing about the "kill" of the day!

As for me, I survived the wasp sting, but not until having to go to the Urgent Care facility due to an allergic reaction.  Yep, three shots in the hind end will teach you to mess with wasps!  Now I have to carry an Epipen in case I ever get stung again.

There is a lesson to learn here

And here it is.  Even in the worst of showings, sometimes you still find the house you love.  As an Owasso REALTOR®, it's my job to help buyers navigate showings, including and especially when there is a snake in the toilet and wasps in the air.

You just never know what the day will bring you when you sell houses in and around Owasso, Oklahoma!

I don't mind nuisance animals at all. Now my grandson had to go to the hospital for a wasp sting a while back, he has been stung a million times and never had a reaction, then one day, BOOM, hospital. I can't say I've had any bad animal encounters on a showing. I did do a video showcase for a home with over 20 different species of exotic animals on premises.

That's a pretty funny, but painful story and certainly not the way to showcase a home. Sounds like it did not sour things for your buyers. How fortunate. I'd say they got the better end of the deal. LOL

Holy Moly.  I found a snake once in a closet and I nearly killed my client running over them to get OUT of the house.  I'm not a fan of snakes.

Dealt with wasps before. Snakes not so much inside the house. Guess my question would be how did it get in? Up thru sewer? Another Real estate Story.
