Before the Taft bridge opened in 1907, getting from downtown to Cleveland Park involved a rather circuitous route. But this bridge changed everything. It provided a direct route along Connecticut Avenue to Cleveland Park, and eventually up to Chevy Chase. Several times each week, I go under this Wasington landmark on my ride home. Along Rock Creek Parkway, and at least during the evening rush hour, there is a very long backup that allowed me to snap this shot!
Patricia Kennedy I love when you tell historic stories of landmarks ..it is so cool

What an awesome photo, did not know it's history thanks for sharing Pat, Endre
If I had a dollar for every time I have been across that bridge, from childhood until now, well, let's see...

Good morning Pat. Always appreciate getting some of the history, thanks for sharing the photo, you captured it very well.
Make it a great weekend!
I've always been drawn to old bridges. I like the design of the Taft bridge. It reminds me a little of those old European Aquaducts.

Hi Pat - Nice photo. I've walked under and across that bridge many times on my visits to DC - it's a nice area.
If you ever give up your "day job", I think you have a future in photography. Amazing picture
Thanks, Gayle! The cross is actually a silouette of a very interesting street light, and that will be the subject of a photo blog when I get caught in traffic going over this bridge!
Jay, um, let's see. You would have more money than you have ActiveRain points?
Hi, Pat. I love bridges and the stories that go along with them! Sorry you were stuck in traffic, but we got a great photograph!
Pat,
Great picture and I hope you guys are ok from all the rains, thanks for sharing and I hope you have a wonderful day!
Nowdays we would not try to build such a nice structure

That's great engineering Patricia Kennedy when something that gets such heavy usage is still in operation today.
Patricia so there are some advantages to be stuck in traffic :)
Nice shot!!!
I found out that the bridge is constructed of un-reinforced concrete, which might make me nervous when I get stuck underneith it.
And George, when I took this, the car behind me started honking like crazy when the traffic pushed forward by an inch! That's the only downside to to snapping photos from the (stopped) car.
Hi Patricia Kennedy , They don't make them like they used to. Thanks for sharing your photo.
Hi Pat -- I love photos of bridges ---- for the engineering feat, often for the beauty of the design as well as the connections of the literal as well as the not so literal meanings. Now, if I only I get rid myself of that fear of heights thing.
