Debbie Reynolds has done it again, come up with a June contest which is bound to help us all. She asks us to recount on a lesson we learned, in business or in life, that we wished we would have learned earlier.
One such lesson I wished I had learned earlier was to Dream Big! For various reasons, some of which I'm very aware, I lived much of my life in a safe way. I knew I'd always have money for a postage stamp (something my mother didn't always have), have a roof over my head, find a way to provide for my children. I had a good life, I was content, I was happy.
But I sensed there was something missing, something that would add richness and fulfillment to my life.
Things changed when I made the decision to join a business coaching program. That was a number of years ago, before life coaching became a buzz word, but this particular program interested me for that very reason; they weren't all about business to the exclusion of the other parts of our lives. I jumped in without holding back and tried things way out of my comfort zone. In doing so, I watched my comfort zone expand.
My coach made me think about and articulate what my own goals were, both personal and professional, and then proceeded to help me achieve them. She--to whom I owe a huge debt of gratitude--asked me one day, "What would happen if you aimed higher, set a bigger goal? Why not try it?"
That thought took root, and soon I became happier than ever, lived life in a less guarded manner, and business soared. I am able to do things with and for my family and friends that I never thought could be possible.
And while I still am far from my dream of being able to write "philanthropist" as my job description on my tax return, it no longer sounds like an impossible dream.
Dream big! Live big! Enjoy!
