Do You Need A Day To Rest?
National Relaxation Day is August 15th
National Relaxation Day is an important day on the calendar. We all need to take a break from the fast paced and often times hectic lifestyles that we live. There are always schedules that we need to follow and appointments, meetings, errands, chores and etc. that keep us busy every single day. The often “too busy” days can become stressful.
It has been proven that stress can be harmful to our health, both mental and physical. Most doctors will agree that finding ways to relax and making time for relaxation may reduce some of the stress-related health risks.
Okay, so not everyone is able to get this holiday off from work, so while you are at your job, do what you can to avoid stress and do not work late that day.
Do you have a favorite activity that helps you relax? A movie, a spa day, fishing, hiking or reading a good book?
Health dot com gives these suggestions to help you relax and relieve stress:
Stare up at the ceiling and count down from 60: Gazing upward stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which lowers blood pressure and slows the pace of the breath. Slow, deliberate counting will also help rid your mind of distractions.
Write down your worries in a notebook, then set it aside for tomorrow: Putting your problems down on paper—and knowing that they're there for you to work through later—may help take your mind off of them while you're trying to rest.
Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth 10 times: Deep breathing slows the heart rate and calms the body. Focusing on your stomach rising and falling, and your breath flowing in and out, will help you concentrate on your body, instead of outside distractions.
Imagine floating on a cloud, and what you would see passing by: Guided imagery is a powerful meditation tool that can give you a temporary escape from everyday worries and stresses. Invite all your senses to participate: Imagine what you see, hear, and smell in this peaceful place.
Slowly tense and relax your muscles, from your head down to your toes: The body responds to stress by involuntarily tensing your muscles, which can cause pain and discomfort. Progressive muscle relaxation reduces muscle tension and general mental anxiety.
If nothing else, try a good laugh. MayoClinic.org says "Stress relief from laughter? It's no joke. When it comes to relieving stress, more giggles and guffaws are just what the doctor ordered. Here's why. Whether you're guffawing at a sitcom on TV or quietly giggling at a newspaper cartoon, laughing does you good. A good sense of humor can't cure all ailments, but data is mounting about the positive things laughter can do.”
