Weverton MD Cliffs and AT Top Center
There are numerous things to do outdoors in and around Lovettsville. Yesterday evening we did a fairly quick hike starting at the old Weverton Grist Mill which is on the VA side of the Potomac river. After exploring and photgraphing the old mill, we headed West towards Harper's Ferry WV on the River Mill Trail. We are actually on the Harper's Ferry Historic National Park land which runs all the way to Lovettsville. Looking across the Potomac, this first photo is of Weverton Cliffs in MD. We have hiked that several times. At the top there is a lady standing on the cliffs that is barely visible. See next photo when I zoom in. The AT goes up from the left from Weverton, then you turn left and head towards Boonsboro MD, or turn right to Weverton Cliffs. That is about a 20 minute drive from Lovettsville, and approximately a 30-45 minute hike from the parking lot up to Weverton Cliffs.
The trail we were on runs along the Potomac all the way to route 340. It appears to be lightly used this time of year and we saw no one hiking out or back. We did see people on the MD side of river fishing, and a few people hiking on Weverton Cliffs. We'll try to go back in a week or two when the leaves have changed color a little more. From Weverton, taking 340 East takes you back towards Knoxville and Brunswick MD. In Brunswick, which is just across the river from Lovettsville, there is parking just below the MARC commuter train lot, where you can access the W&OD Trail. People ride horses, bikes, and hike from there. You can head towards Point of Rocks MD or Harper's Ferry WV. There is also a public boat launch at that location.
So Buying a Home and living in Lovettsville offers numerous nearby outdoor activities for people of all ages. Many more places are available to explore and enjoy within 30 minutes in VA, MD, and WV. If you like Civil War history, there are several locations to visit nearby as well.
Here is a the zoomed in photo of the lady on Weverton Cliffs seen from River Mill Trail on VA side.
