Tuesday, November 29th is Giving Day, also known as Giving Tuesday. This is the fifth annual Giving Tuesday whose purpose is to inspire personal philanthropy and to encourgage some form of charitable giving: time or money or both during the holiday season.
Great Ways You Can "Give" In The Charlotte Metro Area:
Assistance League of Charlotte: sponsors philanthropic programs which feed, cloth, mentor, educate children and families in Mecklenburg County. Financial donations are very much appreciated, however the Assistance League would also be delighted for donations to its AL Thrift Shop of clothing, shoes, household items, electronics, linenes, furniture, books, toys. And you can also volunteer to help out in the AL Thrift Shop.
Carolina Refugee Resettlement Agency: provides help to refugees who've escaped religious and political persecution. Since 1996 more than 3,000 refugees from over 40 countries have been helped by this agency. This agency helps refugees with housing, schooling, jobs, and more. On the Agency's wish list: financial donations, beds, mattresses, linens, furniture, dishes, flatware, pots and pans, car seats, disposable diapers, toiletries, cleaning supplies, winter coats. Volunteers to drive people to medical and social services appointments are needed; as are volunteers to help set up apartments. Check out the Carolina Refugee Resettlement Agency Facebook page.
Council For Children's Rights: the largest child advocacy organization in the Southeast with some 30 attorneys on staff. The Council needs volunteer attorneys and custody advocates to assist with custody cases. Financial donations are what the Council, as well. Check out the Council For Children's Right's Facebook page.
Dress For Success: (one of my personal favorites as a former corporate executive)--helps more than 900 Charlotte area women each year to find jobs, sponsors career preparation and retention programs, as well as provides appropriate clothing for the work world. Their needs require clothing appropriate for interviews and office work, office supplies, and of course financial contributions. They'll take any and all volunteer help you can provide in their programs. Check out the Facebook Page for Dress For Success.
Ronald McDonald House Of Charlotte: provides housing for the families of children who are being treated in Charlotte area medical facilities. Ronald McDonald House needs monetary contributions, gift card to local grocery stores, canned meals, toiletries, paper towels. Or you can help out at the House with evening meals. The Ronald McDonald house also has a wonderful "Adopt A Room" program worth checking out.
Salvation Army Christmas Center: is asking for toys, non-perishable food, gift items appropriate for senior citizens in need... and of course, monetary donations and volunteers to help with all of their many programs, including the Angel Tree, Magical Toy Drive, and Silver Bells programs. Check out the Salvations Army's Facebook Page.
