What Stops You From Spending a Fortune on Art?

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

The one thing that saves me from spending a fortune on art is the fact I have limited wall space. My homes have more windows than large blank walls. But then it doesn't stop me from buying pottery or other hand-crafted artifacts.

As I stood at the counter buying a few small pieces of art for the walls of our Hawaii house, I noticed a sign posted about their featured artist, Kathleen Jeager. I glanced around and my eyes fell upon the loveliest depiction of the sun.

She utilized that element in several pieces. Made me recall the first book of poetry I wrote in 1969. It was entitled: Obnoxious is the Morning Sun. Needless to say, I made the clerk ring up another sales receipt. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: Photos and Story of Intriguing Local Hawaii Artwork.

Good morning Elizabeth. I can't stop myself from buying art that entices me either. My wallsare full, so I rotate.

I have more art than I have walls to display it, but I like the Japanese idea of moving art around or it becomes just a part of the wall you forget about.

What makes you think I've not spent a fortune on art, Elizabeth?  Our walls are full of art we've collected from all over the world. Fortunately we also have a number of friends and relatives who are artists and some of the art has been gifted. At this point, while I have plenty of walls, they are all filled up... so that does not stop me from spending more. Loved that painting you featured.

Hi Elizabeth --- thank you for sharing some of your treasures.  I'm at a point where I'm doing quite a bit of editing in things and in life.   Maybe it will change...maybe it's the new normal.

Hi Elizabeth. That is one nice piece of artwork. One of my nieces is a budding artist. I love heart-work. I cannot get enough of art.Artwork

Elizabeth- I have some pieces I bought just because they "spoke" to me!  If I keep returning and looking at it, then I know I will continue to like it.

Elizabeth,

We really have to both love it, and that is what makes the decision for both of us.  I have big oils that are still in crates...we just don't have the space.  A

And let's not forget the kahu you gifted me with earlier this year for my birthday when we met on Lanai. He is the guardian of my office. Didn't you get him from the Big Island as well? And didn't you say you wanted to get one for yourself?

Ron and Alexandra Seigel  If I did that, I'd buy nothing. Or I'd give in to my husband or he would give in to me. We talk ourselves out of buying anything. He is yin and I am yang.

Nina Hollander Was just throwing it out there because I can see how one can easily get carried away. I came home with pieces that I really have no place to display.

Good morning, Elizabeth.... I've moved so many times I've become very disciplined about not buying what I don't have room for or don't want to keep moving... it took a while to get there, but now I'm ruthless.

Nina Hollander My husband has more of a problem than I do. He has a room filled with every puzzle, board game and books from his childhood years to present. When we eventually downsize, he will be in for a rude awakening. Let's not even discuss our 5,000 CD collection.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents ~ My husband is the type who is pulling the paper out of my hands as I read it asking if I'm done yet so he can throw it away! We got rid of tons of stuff over the years. Especially when moving overseas it becomes just too much to keep hauling around. We got rid of tons of LP's, etc. and I've never missed them.

Nina Hollander Oh, no, not the LPs. Even if I didn't own a turntable, I don't know that I could part with my albums.
