Bee Rock Searcy AR climbing rocks dangerous

Bee Rock, Searcy ARK

Tempted?  Yes, I am tempted to try to buy this old post card that is on ebay right now.  I have never seen a postcard featuring  Bee Rock in Searcy, Arkansas.  Yes, I have heard of Bee Rock, and I remember warning my kids NOT to go to that spot and try climbing rocks.  I have, unfortunately, heard of deaths and accidents happening at Bee Rock so perhaps it is time to discuss Bee Rock on this blog or on facebook.  Can you, Searcy Sleuths, provide more information about this place just outside Searcy AR?  Let's hear about Bee Rock.

Good morning Barbara. I think you should buy it. Ask the seller what he or she knows.

My husband used to climb up to the top and jump into the water below. Many of the kids around Searcy did too. Scary!

Bee Rock early on belonged to the county and was sold to Harding College now University. From that point, it was fenced, posted, and Camp Wyldewood was constructed.  Bee Rock was a gravel quarry, and the county mined 'blue granite' gravel from there. It was absolutely the hardest rock for gravel roads, with a gray/blue tint to the stone.

Being a quarry meant there was a deep hole that filled with water fed from Little Red River during flood stages. Youngsters launched themselves from the rock overhang for swimming. The sloped rocks was a good sunbathing spot.

Bee Rock is in Gray Township.

Here is the location at the marker.

 Here is the satellite view.

Thanks, Don.  I knew you'd come through with information.  My memories are of Bee Rock, Slippery Rock Ford and Bluff Hole.  The second two were in Pangburn and I think that Nancy Snelson, in the comment above, may have been thinking of Bluff Hole where there was a rock and kids jumped into the water from it.  Slippery Rock was  a stream with lovely cool water for wading.  Sleuths, correct me if I am wrong.

Bluff Hole out at Latonia,  had a high bluff on one side so you could climb as high as you dared to before jumping off. The creek was very clear and deep. Bluff Hole is probably the best of the swimming holes. Slippery Rock is not known to me but it could be a lot of places from your description.

Bee Rock was my families favorite place to take a picnic supper in the mid-1940s. We would take a 22-rifle and target shoot. I remember a staircase up to the water processing plant. The were really rough and we would race up and down them This was the source of Searcy water and before the low water dams were built to make sure that there was adequate water in dry years. This was long before Greer's Ferry dam was built and before Harding bought the property,

Harold Gene, thanks for that excellent recap of history.  I thought there was a wall out there where people would shoot.  I guess the staircase was the same as the one there now?  If it is still there....It is pretty funny because before this blog the card was priced at 50 cents.  Now it is over $5 but with no bids.    The owner changed the price, I guess.
