Many Chicago residents like living in condos because they provide lower maintenance than living than a regular house. It’s so important to keep up with cleaning your condo because things could quickly get out of hand. Thankfully, due to their compact nature, cleaning your condo is easier than you think, especially with our easy tips.
Tip #1: Set the mood.
Fall in love with cleaning your condo by getting into your most comfortable lounge clothes and cranking up the volume to your favorite music. Light a candle or two, then you’re set to go. If you have to clean, it may as well be fun, right?
Tip #2: Don’t forget to change a/c filters.
One of the often-overlooked chores in terms of keeping up your condo is changing out the air conditioning and/or furnace filters. Some filters must be changed out and have newer ones put in, while others just need a rinse.
Doing this vital task will do two things: it’ll keep dust from being re-circulated back throughout your condo as you clean, and your energy bill will be lower.
Tip #3: Invest in good cleaning products.
This way you’re sure to always have what you need to clean, no excuses. Good cleaning products don’t necessarily mean the most expensive.
In fact, in today’s environmentally-conscious world, many people are going green and choosing more eco-friendly options to clean their condos. While a degreaser for the kitchen can be helpful, often all you need for many cleaning chores is vinegar, baking soda, warm water, and a little elbow grease.
Otherwise, look for non-toxic, organically produced cleaning products that have no artificial fragrance, colors, phosphates, chlorine, or other harmful ingredients.
Tip #4: Clean your condo as you go. Many of us are rebels when it comes to cleaning and put off the inevitable. Some people clean once a week, while others see if they can get away with once a month. Either way, doing a major cleaning of your condo will be much easier if you’ve done some spot cleaning here and there.
To help you get into the routine of minor everyday cleaning chores, have a designated place to keep your cleaning supplies. Maybe put cleaners in a bucket under the sink.
Wash the dishes and clean up after meals and when you’re done, wipe the counters and stovetop down. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can mop the kitchen floor as it’ll likely have fresh spills after working in it.
Choose a couple of nights while watching tv to dust nearby furniture and small decorative items. Keep a dust rag tucked somewhere closeby so that it’s within easy reach.
Tip #5: Get rid of clutter.
Because of their size, condos can clutter up quickly. Take some time to sort through your things and designate three piles: one to keep, one to give away, and one to throw away.
We all have junk that we couldn’t give away if we wanted to. This is especially the case with broken items or items that have parts missing. Put it in a trash bag and throw it to the curve.
Organize the items you’re keeping so that your condo is less cluttered and easier to keep clean. Anything else that holds no more value for you, give it away. If it’s a decent item that you haven’t used for some time, someone else may get more use out of it.
Tip #6: Divide the remaining chores into weekly or monthly chores.
For instance, clean your bathroom surfaces once or twice a week. Make sure to disinfect areas like your bathroom sink, toilet, and bathtub/shower. Change your bedsheets once a week. Mop your floors once a week as well, and vacuum carpets. Don’t forget the stairs! Vacuum carpet steps and wipe down any nearby banisters.
Every one or two months, collect dust bunnies by vacuuming under the bed. Move lighter furniture to clean the floors there. You should also clean out your pantry and wipe down the inside of your refrigerator once a month. Make sure all old food is thrown out. Add a fresh box of baking soda while you’re at it.
Every couple of months, thoroughly wipe down books and trinkets if you haven’t spot cleaned them on an ongoing basis.
Twice a year, call a professional to clean your air conditioner. They can thoroughly clean your system and filters and reduce the allergens in your home. When you think about it, city living in Chicago has a lot of dust and pollution floating in the air that makes its way into our condos. It’s a no-brainer to see the reasoning behind having a professional clean your a/c system.
Tip #7: Hire a cleaning service now and then to give yourself a rest.
After all, you work hard. The last thing you want to be doing on all of your time off is cleaning. A Chicago cleaning agency can take some of the load off.
It’s important to keep up with maintaining your condo. Keeping your condo neat and clean will make it much more pleasant for you to relax in your home. It’ll also keep the value of your condo up if you should ever decide to sell.
