It's been an uncomfortable but eventful few days at my home. However, I hope current activity in my backyard will bring it all to a good conclusion. Several days ago water began to stream through my backyard along my side fence line. I thought at first a leak was occurring from my neighbor's large Koi pond. But, after further investigation by the water company, it was deemed not likely true. The real culprit was thought to be a water main located at the back corner of my yard, and buried about 3 feet down.
The water company guy outlined what they would need to check the line, and in the process even threatened the life of my family member, Fred! Who is Fred, you ask? Well Fred is the Modesto Ash tree standing in the photo below with the smiling face on his bark. Yes, he and I are a mixed marriage, but my family does not judge!
Any way, after my pleading for Fred's life, the water company guy relented a bit, and said, they would take this project a moment at a time, however would have a euthanasiast standing by, just in case Fred would need to meet his demise! Thus far they have dug, dug, and dug some more. Fred's outstretched legs (roots) don't appear to be the cause of the issue. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Please pray to any gods that are handy, for the life of Fred!
The work on the water main continues. Not all of approximately 17 water main shutoffs throughout my neighborhood were located or shut off. So the broken water main is not yet replaced. The crew of about 6 guys worked hard until about 3:45 am this morning. More outages are slated for today. Hopefully after all water mains have been located and turned off, repairs will occur within 2 to 3 hours.

Myrl Jeffcoat - I can't think of one homeowner who is okay with a water leak or waterline break. It must have been very stressful for you and your family member, Fred, of a mixed marriage. I am not one to judge either. Not knowing can get very intense and with all that digging, you wonder about so many things.
Fred is a very handsome Tree! He has great eyes, nose, and lips! I think he'd be perfect in a Hollywood Movie; perhaps a continuation of a modern Wizard of Oz with Pirates as part of the cast of characters? Except your Fred would not be mean, nor would he be throwing apples!
The digger in comment #18 wears a pretty smirk on his face. I get the impression he really, really cares. I am thrilled to hear that Fred's life has been spared. I wonder if Fred deserves to be recognized with Preservation Sacramento Historic Trees?
May Fred's roots grow deep and stay out of water lines forever! And may you be spared of astronomical repairs!

Myrl Jeffcoat - I re-blogged your post directing comments to you.
P.S. When is your anniversary coming up?
Oh wow, Myrl! Glad that Fred got a reprieve at the end of the day. The mixed marriage comment had me falling off my chair laughing!

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - Thanks so much for reblogging this post. Fred and I can use all good thoughts folks can offer up to the heavens! Fred and I have been together since Valentine's Day 1983. I fell in love with him because he was easy on the eyes, and a good 20 years younger than I. He has stayed loyal to me all these years! What more can a gal wish for!

Myrl Jeffcoat - I'm "rooting" for you and Fred and offering up good wishes "up to the heavens!" I know how important that is! I a had thing with a Colorado Blue Spruce in Northern, Illinois. I planted it when it was only three inches high! It's brothers and sister, unfortunately, got cut down by a lawnmower. I babied my tree and built a fence around it. Each time I had reason to go back to visit family, I visited my old house and took photos of my tree. It grew, and grew, and grew to be taller than the house!
I'll be sure to remember your anniversary. Valentine's Day is easy enough for me to remember! 1983... it seems like just yesterday. I can understand why you fell in love with him. Yes! He is easy on the eyes! Falling in love with someone younger is so romantic! And when they are loyal, they are keepers! I see he hasn't strayed or made a move. He has gotten bigger and I just know, you like him that way! I'm sure when there is a drought, you feed him well! And when he is thirsty, you give him something to drink.
As you say, "what more can a gal wish for!!!"

All - The completion of the water main replacement was at 12:45 am late last night. They are back today, to fill in the hole, and restore the landscape. Now onward to get Fred's hair cut to keep his locks out of the utility wires above his head.
For a little something on the lighter side. Last evening, the water flowing in street gutters, allowed for a recreational activity not normally seen. Neighbors built little boats and had sailboat races in the stream. Here's a photo of my neighbor and his mother enjoying their race. See those two little boats? Too cute!
Good Wednesday evening, Myrl. It is good to see that your tree has been saved.

Serious and yet, amusing story, Myrl Jeffcoat . You write your stories in such an entertaining way, even serious ones - in this case a broken water main and saving the life of a true and long friend, your Fred. So happy for you and also for Fred. Can't wait to see his new haircut. Have a great day!!

So glad to hear that Fred is well, Myrl. That would have been awful to have, well, removed him! Thankfully they were able to fix the problem. But you can't help but think of all that wasted water!!
