LGBTQ History Course Approved for High Schools

The Montgomery County Board of Education has approved an LGBTQ History course that is being referred to as the first of its kind in the United States.

Per superintendent Jack Smith’s proposal, the goal of the semester-long course is to increase awareness of students to the history, culture, and challenges of the LGBTQ community in America.

The course is designed both for students who identify as LGBTQ+ and for those who do not. For students who identify as LGBTQ+, this course will empower them as they learn about their shared history, culture, and contributions. For students who do not identify as LGBTQ+, this course will increase understanding and acceptance of their peers and others in this community.

The course is intended for 11th and 12th grade students, and could be offered as early as next spring in two MCPS high schools and eight other MCPS high schools during the 2021-2022 school year.

Good morning, Roy Kelley that's a wonderful addition to the curriculum of any school across the country..... I hope other school boards include it in theirs.... it's needed more than ever before....

I don't believe we have any thing like that course here in California, Roy.  It sounds like a good idea.

Hello Roy - interesting to see this high school history course is a first of its kind in the country as well as in Montgomery County.

With predicted budget cuts in school funding in many districts in the US, often such programs are among the first to be cut.

My only concern is that students not be ing given freedom of choice ( opinion) .

Today in a Biology Class you will Fail, if you don’t accept Darwin’s THEORY of Evolution. No matter how well you might be able to state your opinion.

Roy,

I am delighted to hear that this is being taught in your area.  We have to open our minds to differences instead of wanting to have it one way.  A

Good for this school district to start the process Roy. It will be interesting to see if other districts follow...

Interesting!  I remember when they first brought out "sex education" in high school and that was quite controversial back then.
